My handbook says i sould;

key at position 0
push and hold button on phone holder thing
after 3 seconds turn ignition key to pos 1
3 more seconds release button and i should get 'bluetoothpairing etc'

when ifollow the instructions all i get is "searching" for about 5 minutes and then "activate phone"

my phone can't detect any bluetooth devices

?

Sounds like your doing it right. What year is your car and what phone are you trying to pair?
Sometimes it helps to clear all to old paired phones before you pair your new one.

that is the correct sequence and works for me on iPhone
You might get more help if you define set up in car ( satnav or not etc )and which phone
I assume you have the cars 4 digit pairing code which is supplied from factory on a card with vehicle docs

Ensure all phones are removed from car's B/T ( instructions in book) and suggest you try the same on phone
many of us have had to attempt the pairing many times sequentially before it works But you will need the code

It seems the manual is a big old lie

I followed these instructions on t'interweb which worked

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=261124

1) Turn car on but not the engine on (position doesn't matter)
2) Press the R/T button just once
3) Radio says "Activate (pause) Phone (pause) Activate (pause) Phone" ...
4) Go to your phone, Do search for new device
5) Phone will find BMW##### (last 5 = last 5 of VIN)
6) Pair, follow directions for your phone, etc

Hi I found out that when mine wouldn't pair it was due the cable snapping where the cubby hole hinges in the centre console. Over time it had snagged during opening and closing. So would be worth checking that also.

This worked for me, i tried for ages to activate with no luck, it was only coincidence i discovered this,, switch the phone off and then back on again (or the blue tooth on the phone) then activate phone, i still have to do it occasionally too.
