Has anyone had any experience having a car service at National Tyres?

My Z4 is due a service and money is very tight at the moment....

National offer a great package for a very good price and I just wondered if anyone had used them etc..

Guess it comes down to what you are classing as "service" & how much is their "good" price ? :?

They do a full service for £167 for the Z4, you just pay extra for the spark plugs and £10 extra for fully synthetic oil!

Hhhmmm , i'm not a fan of big name franchises for this very reason , the vast majority of the tasks are covered within a MOT test so cut to the chase & ask what your car is actually due ? then go from there .

Just had a tot up for filters and oil for my 2.5 using Carparts4less on line with their current discount code applied Air, Oil, Pollen filters plus 6ltrs Shell Oil would cost £57.85, so youre paying just about £100 or so for their labour to do the job, and most of the checks are just visual checks which you could do yourself if so inclined. Get yourself along to one of the enthusiast groups who run Zed sheds between themselves like we do in South Wales, you would get it done with a donantion to the tools fund as long as you source the spares to fit.

I know I hear what you are saying. I did go to a local BMW specialist near to me and they advised a full service would be nearly £349 so I am caught between a rock and a hard space!

In life you mostly get what you pay for when you go to a good indie .I would leave National tyres to what they specialise in ,Tyres.

Stamp in the book is the biggest issue that stops most from self servicing.

I would change the filters (air & microfilter) and spark plugs myself. Then take the car to my local trusty mechanic and get him to put the car on the ramp to do the oil and oil filter change and a quick inspection underneath, he charges me around 20 to 30€ and stamps the book, job done!

OP, if you're not mechanically minded, you could always ask around if there's a member near you who would help?
You buy the parts and use a fraction of the money you save to provide the beers.
That way you also get to learn a bit more.

This just goes to show the value or not of having a full service history also applies to repair work.

Ranging from full BMW service stamps to the hobby diy mechanic

So full BMW service could be as good Every thing done exactly as it should be with genuine parts (I have seen Europarts delivering to a BMW main dealer)

It could mean just the min done by BMW to get a stamp in the book and any emerging work done by others

An independent service history could be done by people that do a very good job and care about what they do and use oem parts or value for money parts when it is good to do so, and keep the car to the standard it was supposed to be

Another take on independent is they Do what the customer asks for a quality job or a cheap fix and parts that reflect that request

High street chain offering servicing This is to a menu and a cost limit then plus chargeable extras as their costs are controlled to be profitable they will use whatever parts fit the business model.

Then there is the do it yourself that range from engineers that care for their cars above and beyond the original standard to the dam right dangerous.

So you pays your money and take your choices just do it with your eyes open

I had a service and mot done on my Passat cc by halfords, the price included a discount code .and was quite a bit less than the dealership.
I checked afterwards and they'd done all the work included, I'd marked parts beforehand.
Gave options for oil choice etc.
Stamped the service book.

I always do it my self for 2 reasons 1) I can do it myself, 2) I don't trust any garage to do the job I'm paying for, even more so now, with electronic dip sticks. I keep the receipts in a file and fill in the service book myself. I have tractability back to the dated receipts. If I'm going to the trouble of buying the parts, why would i not out them in?

Agreed, but for some people your last sentence and reason 1 may be mutually exclusive, for a variety of reasons.

Having been a supplier to the motor trade all my life, there are not many garages I would trust with my Z4. Bottom of the list would be fast fit tyre outlets. They employ tyre fitters and attract employees at the bottom end of ability. If you speak to decent specialists, they find it very hard to expand their businesses because a lack of ability within the workforce. Even in main dealers, they are just fitters as they would rather replace than diagnose and repair. Personally, I would scour your local area for a decent specialist, who has built their reputation on your type of vehicle.

Service history is very important, service invoices (parts or labour or both) are more important than a stamped service book. After the car reaches a certain age a main dealer history is not so important.
