Servicing question

Bit of a newbie on here, and couldn't find a deffinitave answer with the search feature, so here goes
My 2004 2.2 is up for it's inspection 2 service. My local BM dealer want's £500 for this and my local independant wants £330
There is a BMW trained mechanic, with his own business, who is prepared to do the service for £40 labour + parts and stamp the book, which sounds great to me. But is this a very good deal or false economy and not the way to go?

Hi hourly rate seems ok for the independent. There is limited extra value if the log book is stamped from now on by a BMW dealer as the car is over 8 years old. I would make sure they use genuine BMW parts and go with the independent.

What are they doing for £500 - that sounds a lot.

I'd go to an Indy and consider spending the savings on getting the gearbox and diff oil changed too.

I,de want a breakdown of the parts for £290........that seems a tad high to me

Yep, he must be desperate to offer a major service for £40. Stay away

I was quoted £430 for Inspection II by a main dealer on an Alpina. She said that was the 3.0 price when I sighed with relief (I'd been expecting M pricing)

A 2.2 is a 6 pot so I'd assume costs will be close to what I paid. Ring around and play the main dealers off against the local indies, they'll normally price match if they can. Also main dealers offer a discount program for cars over 5yrs old
