Hey forumites,

I'm sure this has been done to death but I'd appreciate a little advice. I'm about to put my car up for sale and I have a small issue with the service book in that it was stamped once at 2.5 years old with 1210 miles on it, and its going for inspection I tomorrow with 27500 miles on it. This means the book will show:
1) Oil Service, Brake Fluid Service, Micro Filter - 1210 miles - 3/5/11 - BMW Douglas Park [MOT @ 1384 10/2011]
2) Oil Service, Inspection I, Brake Fluid Service, Micro Filter - ~28000 miles - 03/09/2014 - Garage768
Between these two "Official" services I have been servicing it myself with the following:
fresh oil & filter - 11000 - 05/2012, [MOT @ 16063 10/2012]
fresh oil & filter, micro filter, air filter - 19000- 05/2013, [MOT @ 25879 10/2012]
fresh oil & filter - 26500 - 05/2014.
Having moved house twice during ownership I've misplaced(or at least can't find them right now) all my parts receipts :( which unfortunately for me makes the above sound like Bu!!$hit :o when(if) a prospective buyer comes around.
Anyway back to my question, should I fill the book in for the services I did myself so that the car doesn't look as neglected?

I wouldn't do the service book yourself personally. I would just explain it how it is to potential buyers and then let the car do the talking. Unless the person filling in the service book is a qualified mechanic of some description, filling it in yourself has the potentially to look 'dodgy'. But it's up to you of course :)

Wouldn't worry... I got mine with 23500 miles and it wasn't & didn't need a service, that was 2.5 years ago... I've changed the oil and brake fluid since owing but the oil service still says 6k which I never reset (that's like 4 years mileage for me) my last official service was 2011! I have not changed my oil this year as I did 1.2k miles...

My car has had 2 previous owners and was not used much in the last 8 years (6k ish miles) 17k was done by the original owner in 2004/5...

If your car is genuine I wouldn't worry ;)

I've done 26k now!

I do my own servicing on all my cars & bikes, retired engineer and incurable petrolhead so never let anyone else near them unless they've had to go to a dealer for some reason. At every service I write in the servivce book "Owner serviced" and keep the receipts to back up, which will tie in with the date I put in the service book. Never had a problem with this even when trading them in. IMO any record of servicing is better than nothing as long as there are receipts to prove. Tough if you've lost the receipts though, in that case as mentioned already, it looks a bit dodgy so I'd leave them blank
