Servicing again !!

Sorry Guys but I'm on this topic again :)

I'm getting all the bits together to give my car a full service (Its on 72K) and while I was at it I was going to replace the gearbox and brake fluid.

Is there a specific spec on these or are any decent quality proprietary fluids ok? I'm not intending to do any track days or anything so standard spec is fine. Could someone also confirm the correct quantities please as I don't want to buy too little and find I've not got enough to complete. Is the gearbox oil change much of a faff?

I've put together the following parts but if I've forgotten anything please shout. its a 2003 E85 3.0

6.5 litres fully synthetic LL04 oil
Oil Filter
Air Filter
Cabin / Pollen filter
Pads front & rear plus new wear indicator cables (Discs are fine)
spark plugs NGK BKR6EIX (6418) x 6
Brake fluid ?......
Gearbox fluid ? .....

The coolant was only changed recently when the thermostat housing was replaced so that should be ok, I checked the strength before Christmas.

I will be doing all the usual checks including steering fluid top up, battery condition, brakes lines, tyres condition and pressures etc

i believe the E85 has electric steering so there is no fluid to top up ,well mine has anyway its 2005 E85

Nothing wrong with the gearbox but I thought at 12 years old and 72K it might be worth changing the oil. Surely it must deteriorate over time?
 
Yes, well worth changing. I chucked some castrol stuff in mine, can't remember the grade but you can find it online, takes about 1.6 litres for the manual 6 speed.
As for brake fluid, if you're not tracking, then any old stuff will do.

You only need pad sensors if yours have come on and it's worth changing the diff fluid too. Different spec to box.
 
Hi RayM,

Just had my service my zed and got him to change gearbox and differenetial oils. I used the following oils for mine;

Differential - http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-1016-red-line-synthetic-gear-oil-75w-90-gl5.aspx

I bought 2 bottles of each from opieoils. officially the gearbox needs 1.6l and the diff 1.2l the only trouble with the diff is that there is only a single plug so you need to suck the oil out to drain it and that means you cannot get all of the oil out.

Also if you are going to change either gearbox or diff oils you should get new plugs as they are one use. The part numbers are;
Gearbox - 23117531356 (£5.45 each)
Diffferential - 33117525064 (£4.91 each)
You will need two gearbox plugs and 1 differential plug if you choose to change both. I got mine from Soper BMW, prices above.

Ah ok I read it wrong in my slumber haha. Thought you were changing the whole gearbox.
 
Defiantly recommend doing Diff and Gearbox oil

Munich Legends did my Z4 and I think they changed the fluids for different to OEM stuff as it worked better, I cant remember what was used for the gearbox but the gear change was a lot better after and the diff they used LSD oil from memory.

Ive never heard of that before :( Is it really common? are there any UK suppliers?
