Servicing cost are cheaper @ a dealer than most people think. They offer a plus 4 scheme. If your car is older than 4 years old it qualifies for cheaper parts & labour rates. When getting prices ASK for the plus 4, as there not to forward at telling you. I had prices from Indy's & dealers & there's not a massive differance sometimes. Inspection 2 on my 3.0si main dealer £315 ! I think that's a great price. £ 260 cheapest Indy.
Some offer that scheme, some don't. Some offer their own loyalty scheme.
There's also supposed to be offers for cars over 5 & 6 years old, but I've yet to find anywhere that this makes a difference to the price.
Finally, there's the 'value' servicing scheme for ///Ms (and other models) that is about £300 cheaper than RRP, but again it's up to the dealer whether they offer it or not.
However, there are lots of little things that dealers are supposed to check but either don't or don't report the results. Most owners ignore, are unaware of, or just don't bother asking about these and then go on to spout how wonderful the dealer was...for example:
- Check the Mobility kit - the gunk is supposed to be replaced every 3 years (I didn't spot that for a few months, so didn't complain) - I'd go out and check your's, if it's not been replaced then you've been charged for something the hasn't been done
- Bodywork check - I had a couple of quite visible rust patches on the underside of the hatch (as mentioned on here) and they never spotted them - so much for their bodywork check
- Service indicator reset - very basic part of the service/inspection, but I've had to 'remind' the service adviser of this task in about 50% of the cases my cars have been to dealers
- Brake disc/pad check - if you're lucky you'll get a report of how much pad/disc is left, but most times I'll just get a "they're fine" or "they're worn" report
- Tyre check - again it's a minor part of the inspection, but I've had instances where I've got 2 new rear tyres in the garage that I've not had time to be fitted and the dealer has said they're fine when they'd obviously not checked them at all (as I was well into the wear bars on one side)
Some will say that these are minor items and I agree, and you can check these yourself (and you should), but if they can't afford/bother to a proper job on these minor items why do we assume they're doing a proper job on the rest of the stuff they're supposed to.
It sounds hypocritical that I'm still using the dealer network myself when I don't trust the 5 or 6 dealerships in my area (not naming & shaming), and I've been going further & further afield to find others (or have had services done at whichever is local to where I'm working at the time), but I've only stayed in the dealer network to maintain my warranty.
Ironically, it was the cheapest one so far (Knights of Stoke) that has done the best so far. They provided me with a valve clearance report, tyre report, and told me my brake fluid service was due (and did I want them to do it). If I stay in the dealer network this year then I will go back to them, despite the 110 mile round trip.
I would also try Batemans near Kendal (as recommended by SammyZ), but that's just a bit too far (180 mile round trip) - especially when most courtesy cars (for inspections, I will wait for an oil service) come with a 35 mile limit or 'admin' charge anyway.
