My Z4M, 2006 58k miles, is due a service in 3k miles, the last service was an Inspection 2 in Oct 2013. Will this be an oil service or an Inspection 1? As the last service was some 20 months ago should I have it done before the onboard readout advises it? I only average about 4k miles annually.

Yep as above, although with all these horrid threads with worn internals, it almost seems reasonable to do oil services more regularly. :(

Time to invest in a dipstick scavenge pump machine so i can do interim changes myself. Would also be useful on the track car to be fair, save getting dirty and getting oil all down my arm.
 
Although I take mine to main dealer I have a relationship with a BMW indi (forum sic) who are ex BMW mechs. He said to me that he has seen a lot of wear on these engines and would reco a min of oil service every 12 months which he does for me.
 
Thanks. I always was keen on at least annual oil changes. Beyond that it seems as though it's stretching engineering and oil quality. The local BMW seemed confident though on the onboard indicator. I'm going with early oil service anyway.
 
Does a Z4M differ to a 'normal' Z4 which when you turn on the ignition displays the distance to the next type of service?

e.g. After an Insp2 in March my shows "oil service (due in)14325" miles.
 
Annual/7500 miles between oil changes for me. And mine are mostly motorway miles.
No science behind it other than I've seen what comes out after 15000 and 8000! The only definitive answer is to have some analysis carried out which then gives you a guide on when to change that specific oil, in your specific engine, with you as the driver.

I don't trust the indictor at all, even if it does measure the quality of the oil. An extra £50 on oil and filter every 6 months is worth it in my mind if you're planning on keeping long term.

+1 on oil service, but don't forget the brake fluid :o
 
I might go toward annual brake fluid changes, will see what sort of state the current fluid is in when I do a disk and pad change.
