Service, whats it due ?

It would be interesting to see what BMW warranty would say.

I imagine they would want them carried out as below in that order.

Oil
Ins 1
Oil
Ins 2
Oil
etc

Every 2 years maximum, regardless of mileage.

I personally would want the services to follow the above structure as a minimum on any M car I would buy and would walk away if they didn't. I am not your average buyer and am mega fussy so take my views with a pinch of salt.

Agreed plus the fluid changes that I mentioned earlier which aren’t covered as standard by BMW.

That is not an M bulletin though.

Yep...it is... :tumbleweed:

PVR is correct, its not really they have used the current condition based servicing model and applied it across the board. If you are happy paying £1,262 for the service below with no mention of shim checks, and gearbox and diff fluid changes fill your boots.

Engine oil service with microfilter, air filter & spark plugs £1262

SERVICE DESCRIPTION
Engine oil is drained and the engine is refilled with BMW approved oil
Oil filter is removed and replaced with a Genuine BMW oil filter
Microfilter(s) is removed and replaced with a Genuine BMW microfilter
Air Filter is removed and replaced with a Genuine BMW air filter
Spark plugs are removed and replaced with BMW approved spark plugs
For vehicles over 10 years old this may be referred to as an Inspection Il service. Please refer to your owner's manual or speak to your service advisor for more information
Relevant service light reset
Recommended every 18,000 miles or 2 years from last inspection. To alternate with and Inspection l service if applicable

But they talk about service lights. That went out in the early to mid nineties though.

As you know PVR, the website cannot be used for service info for older cars, it doesn't work and gives incorrect information. Most main dealers apparently say now shims are not required to be checked during Inspection 1 services.

You guys doing inspection services based on time are mad and obviously have too much money! I agree that rubber components will degrade over time, but unless a car is doing crazy low miles such components will last until the next inspection service. Replacing spark plugs based on time is just stupid, as is doing valve clearances.

LOL!!

It can be 4 years between inspections, it's not like people are throwing thousands at servicing every few months...

Now you are just making up your own service requirements.

BMW warranty isn’t an issue as long as the oil and brakes services are done every two years and inspection services are done on mileage.

If you don’t agree then fine, that’s up to you, but I’m happy following the service schedule as others do.

BMW service book states that with low mileage cars additional oil services can be carried out between inspection services which are done on mileage.

That doesn't read as you have described it in my eyes.

All that says is regardless of miles, engine oil should be changed every 2 years, it doesn't say its ok to skip inspection services.
You're interpreting that in a very odd way - nobody was suggesting to skip inspection services.

The formal service schedule is performed solely on miles driven. So up to 15k miles between services (let's leave discussion of optimum service intervals for another day). This means that an inspection service should be done every 30k miles.

If however less than 15k miles are driven within a 2 year period then an oil change must be performed. Note that this is not an oil service, although most dealers will treat it as such. When this oil change is performed the service indicator must not be reset, as the service indicator is mileage based and this is not an oil service but rather an oil change.

This has turned into a what people think is the best service regime thread rather than what the OP asked which was what service is due. As far as warranty is concerned, BMW will agree with srhutch and pvr. There is no argument about that, it’s been well tested over the years and discussed to death too. If you want to follow oil service, Insp 1, oil service, Insp 2 and so on then there may well merit in that. It’s what I’ve done up to now in the 10 plus years and 60k miles I’ve owned mine. That may change now that I’ve bought a daily beater.

Mangozac has summed it up perfectly as I was typing this.

thanks all interesting read.

Many views on the subject OP as we have all seen

Basically what it all balls down to is, do whatever works for you and what your budget is really :)

Well went to Darren Woods today for a inspection 1. £299 + vat and small charge per valve shim. I needed 5 doing. All else a ok :)
