service oils advice to a newbie

Hi,
can anybody advise on what brand of oil and viscosity etc is the best that i can buy to replace in the engine of a 2004 3.0l automatic. Also it still has approx 2500mls indicated until next service. I am inclined to change every year or do i wait until notified by service reminder which still has about 2500mls to go. Also is it advisable to change the auto transmission oil and diff oil at the same time on these cars?
I keep pulling up Castrol edge, but different types and viscosity depending on which website i visit, confused :( Any advice would be fantastic.

On a different note, how long is it before that Christmas morning feeling of getting the best toy ever fade or disappear? Its been a couple of weeks now and i still have to frequently nip and have a look just to prove to myself i have a Z4 :driving:
My wife however thinks i`m just a very sad old man with a late life (57yrs old) crisis!!!

Castrol magnatec i bought 5w/30... something with an LL04 code is a must.. pop your reg into opie oils website and you'll get plenty of options. Congrats on the new car... I'm 5 months in and still loving it

Eurocarparts are another good site for oil.

Again, pop in your reg and the grades come up. As above, 5w/30 with BMW LL04 spec.

I've just dropped mine and refilled with Petronas Syntium 5000. ECP have it on half price at the moment for £24.99. They'll be a code or 2 knocking about for at least an extra 10% off somewhere.

It's a 20min job with 10mins of that waiting on the oil to drain. P.S, don't forget your filter!

I used the Petronas Syntium 5000 which meets BMW long life spec from Eurocarparts. Dont bother with the 3000 which isnt really suitable. The Haynes manual which covers the Z4 recommends that if you want to keep your car in tip top condition then ditch the BMW service intervals and service yearly or 6000 miles. The BMW intervals are the absolute max which really isnt adequate for a car which may have covered a good few miles.
I dont think there is a service interval for changing gearbox and diff oils but again owners find the oil to be fairly dirty after about 50000 miles so again car will love you if you change these now and then. And, dont forget the air filter which hadnt been changed on my main dealer serviced car in 10 years!!

I use castrol 5w/30 I get all my servicing bits from Carparts4less.co.uk its the same company as Eurocarparts and always slightly
cheaper as well

Congratulations on the new motor, it takes a long time for the smile to go ive still got mine 4 yrs later
