Service light

I have an 06 z4mc that just hit 63k miles. Today the service light came on. I am a bit confused since the previous owner had told me the 60k service was done.
I am still waiting to receive all of the paperwork including past shop visits etc.
So I'm not sure if he had lied about the 60k being done, wasn't actually sure since he only put 1000 miles on it since purchasing from the original owner, or if the light just hasn't been cleared properly?

I am assuming this is the service interval ii? What all does this entail? How much do these services run if it hasn't been done?

Thanks in advance

You will only know for sure once you get hold of the past paperwork - specifically the Service history, which I'm surprised didn't come with the car?

It sounds like you didn't check that the service had been carried out? Don't panic though at this stage, there is every chance that the service reminder wasn't reset. You can do this yourself (a quick search on here or Google) once you find out if it has been done. Is the car saying it is an oil service or an inspection that is due?

Regards, Dave

He had forgotten to bring the paperwork with him when I picked up the car. He was supposed to get it to me before Christmas and then went out of town for the holidays and I had forgotten until it came on today so sent him another message about getting those papers.

I haven't received the paperwork from the previous owner to ensure it had been. I just took his word initially and figured the papers would back it up.

I know the m3 had a piece to plug in and resets the light. It was just a light by the speedometer that lit up saying service engine soon

No problem, fingers crossed it is serviced as promised. To reset the light you do this:

- Ignition OFF (POS 0)
- Press and Hold the trip odometer button while turning key to position 1 (ACCESSORY)
- Keep the button depressed (about 5 secs.) until you see "Oil Service" or "Inspection" with "Reset" or "Re" in the display
- Press the button again and hold for approx. 5 secs. until "Reset" or "Re" flashes
- While the display is flashing, briefly press the button again to reset the Service Interval.

(copied from a previous thread on this forum) :)

never ever take peoples word on this type of stuff!!! Especially on any engine thats S deritive, no way!! i would have never took or sent final payment for the vehicle without seeing the the service paperwork.... its not a massive issue if you already knew, but in this case it seems you've been lied too..... hopefully thats not the case.

risky move and the guy must have rubbed his hands together when he gave you the i forgot line and you accepted it.... How on earth can you forget the cars paperwork on the day your selling it and gaining significant wedge.... alarm bells would be ringing.

I dont want to reset the light if it hasn't been done.
I am supposed to grab the papers from him this weekend. Fingers crossed there is one for the 60k service.

If not does anyone know what all it entails?

Depends but it's either Inspection 2, or maybe the oil service afterwards.

Hmmm... There is no 60k service as such. The service indicator counts down from 15k, but due to driving styles I doubt anyone sees 15k between scheduled services.

You ask the question what will it entail, well basically you parting with £800-£1000 if it's an Inspection 2 (which it would 'normally' be around that mileage).

Hopefully, it has been done, but if I were the seller it would have been one of the key selling points I would have drawn your attention to i.e "look what I spent on the service just 1000 miles ago".....tbh I'd be worried it hasn't been done.

Don't take this the wrong way, but is this your first M/performance car...? If so, and you don't know too much about them I'd get it checked over by a specialist to ensure it's all in order.

Ps the milage is not miles dependant
It goes by fuel consumption
If remember something like 10,000 litres without losing through my notes

HPI only covers UK cars.
I didn't think E46 based cars held the service information in the key.
