service intervals -- time-based as well as mileage-based?

A lot of European cars are on extended service intervals now (15-20k miles). They use 'long life' oil (sounds like snake oil to me). Maybe this oil isn't in use in the US hence the shorter intervals?

If it was going to cause them warranty problems they wouldn't do it. Of course, whether it causes problems after the warranty expires is another question.

Dealer told me that it's as per the service indicator, or every 2 years.
There's a service bulletin here in NA stating once per year and to not reset the SIA. No time to look for it - I believe Ron Stygar posted it over at bimmerfest...

I think it's posted on this thread also but it appears to be dated October 2001. Funny all the different answers we're getting. It seems each dealer makes their own rules. Best to be informed.

In all these comments I don't see any mention of what kind of oil people are using. I fine it amazing anyone would even consider going one or two years before changing oil and I don't care how many miles it was or wasn't driven. I use Royal Purple synthetic 5-30 and change every 5,000 miles. Oil is a lot cheaper than a new engine.
