I have just bought a sept 2010 model and would like to know how you know when it needs servicing...........or how you can check /see the oil level.............as there is no dipstick/....thanks...... its done 11000 miles and was last serviced at 6500

It depends on whether you have iDrive or not. Your manual should cover it. With iDrive you can get the information from the Vehicle Information area. Without iDrive I believe you use the left control stalk on the steering column to navigate the menus on the speedo. Have a quick look in your manual.

+1. You can check the oillevel in Vehicle Info on I drive.

With or without I drive, on the left hand stalk use the 'flip button' on the front and flick it up a few times until oil level appears on the info centre between the speedo and the rev counter.

You will see the oil level here then,

Rgds

the service info pops up for a few seconds on the info centre as soon as you start up. shows month/year and miles to go before service.

Which is more important for official BMW servicing compliance (for warranty claims etc...) the service indicator on the display which tells you when to service the vehicle, or xxx miles/xx months since the last service? :?

Its effectively the same thing as the car will tell you when and which service is due - you can check when all the services are next due via iDrive or the dash computer/display if you dont have iDrive. If your car has a dealer service history the details are stored in your key fob which the dealer reads and updates at each service

It can't be the same thing, as the info on the dashboard says that the service is not due until this September, but the last stamp in the service book is from October 2011 and I was concerned that the car needs to be serviced every year/xxx miles to keep up with the official history for warranty purposes?

Most cars now operate a variable service schedule which alters the service date/mileage dependent on usage and sensor readings from various systems. It's quite possible that there could be up to 24 months between services especially as yours has only done approx 5000 miles since the last service. However there is also nothing to stop you taking it to the dealer and asking them directly whether it needs a service to maintain warranty validity - if you're nice they will check without charging - they'll see it as an opportunity to add you to their system and send you a bunch of sales material ;-)

+1 Above. Also, with the iDrive, I can get remaining distance for Brakes, Brake Fluid and Oil Change. There is another (IIRC) called Vehicle Inspection which is related to the next due MOT date, according to the Stealer.

This is something Im getting annoyed at.

I had issues on the 2 year brake oil change at 14K 2 years only to be told a full service was done. I did not pay as I asked them to prove it was needed as the car was showing 8K for service.

You do this from the on board computer with car started but dont move. It will scroll through service info and it will list
A Service miles and a date
B Oil change miles and date
C Break oil change date
D Road worthy test miles and date (I think this is MOT)
E Front break check miles
F Rear break check miles

Anyway service light popped on 28K miles so booked it in only to find it was a rear break pad check, and they were 4mm so advised changing.

I asked them to print me out the service data thats on the key and I have the following

A) Rear brake, service counter 1, due in 0 miles - now 30K miles
B) Vehicle check service counter 1 due in 8,000 miles 1/2014
C) Engine oil service counter 2 due in 9,000 miles 2/2014
D) Break fluid service counter 2 due in 1/2014
E) Front brake service counter 1 due in 24,000 miles
F) Statutory vehicle inspection due in 3/2013- now 3/2014
G) Air filter - combined with engine oil
H) Spark plugs - combined with engine oil
I) Microfilter - combined with engine oil

I got the print out before the service so I can see what was needed.

Now there is a include range of either 70 days or 3,106 miles on the items as well so unsure if items can be combined but according to the above I will need to send it to the garage
Jan for B+ D
Feb for C,G,H and I
March for MOT

Thats just barmy

I would advise anyone to pop in and get the key service data print out

Well I think that is the point of the include miles/period. If you take it in Jan they should do B,D and C,G,H,I because they will be within 70 days. I'm surprised it isn't 90 days to be honest, at least that would limit you to 4 visits maximum per year no matter how out of sync things got.

Plus don't forget you do have ultimate say in it, it's your car - I would wait until Feb, get B,D,C,G,H,I done and then you can also get your MOT renewal done without changing the renewal date (you can have up to 30 days overlap). One visit.

Agreed, reason why its worth knowing all the details.

I was unsure on the miles I remember a few years ago that bmw wrt may be void if the service went over 1K. SO it looks like they have opened this up a bit so no real panic for 3K I was told this when booking it in at 1K to go. Like you say 90 days should be the maximum.

Still im px this on tuesday so new one has 31 miles on and prereg in dec so it will be break oil change in 18 months time the first one.
