when I turn my car on it says oil service 15400 but my car has done 123000 miles! what does this mean?

It means your due for a service in 154000 miles or 2 years which ever comes first.

Most people hear do annual servicing rather than every 2 years.

thanks that makes sense as it was serviced just before I bought it. thing is when ive taken it for a fast drive the orange oil light a beep comes on at the end when I turn engine off which means oil top up I know

If I was you I'd be getting the oil changed so that you know that the correct amount is in the engine and that it's decent oil and filter.

Change the oil every year in the spring as it's relatively cheap.

I see that it's a 2006 2.5.

Are you finding any oil peeking under the car? Perhaps obscured by the under tray?

Is it burning oil?

Was the correct amount put in?

Top it up when asked and then check for leaks.

Some of these cars go through a lot of oil others don't. Think it's something like 1l per 1000 miles.

Mine doesn't though and the previous Z4 was fine too.

ive topped up with a litre of castrol edge and oil reads ok now. before I topped up I left the car for 5 mins before I opened up where the oil goes and it was a bit smokey

I think you got one too many zero's there :scratchhead: lol

Now that it's topped up is the oil warning light out?

If so check the engine and see if there's any evidence of leaks.

If you wont be working on it yourself then I suggest you get your favourite machanic to give it a quick once over and health check. As skelters says, change the oil yearly ( not bi-yearly ) with good quality oil and you should be fine.

the oil says ok now and theres no trace of oil in the engine, it looks pretty clean. is it quite commen for a little smoke to come out from the oil cap?

If the engine was hot then opening the filler cap would allow any vapours that have accumulated in the engine to escape.

Don't think it's anything to worry about unless it was enough to blacken your face!

im hoping that's what it is. supposedly its good to open it up every now and then to let the vapours out
