Service history on Z4 I'm thinking of buying

Hello.

I'm new to this forum since I don't have a Z4 (yet). I just sold my old SLK230 and now I want to upgrade to an '04 Z4 3.0 steptr. I've found 2 cars that I'm interested in. They are both in the expensive end of the scale because they have every option available and are low milage. The one I'm most interrested in has 62.000 km (37 k miles) on it. Seller has sent me lots of photos and it looks like it's in a very good condition - only a small scratch on the front bumper and a scratched wheel. Now I've asked seller to send photos of every page in the service manual. The first oil change was done in june 2006 at 24.000 km (14,5 k miles) Breakfluid at the same time. Next entry is from 2009 41.000 km (24,5 k miles) and only says brakefluid. Next entry is oil change from 2012 at 58.000 km (35k miles) - and then the last oilchange was made yesterday.

Should I worry about the service history of this car?

The service intervals on the Zed are quite long (depends how the Zed is driven - the service interval is determined by the car). Oil should be changed at least every two years and so should brake fluid. When I bought my 2008 3.0si I was concerned by what looked like very little servicing done on the car but it was an Authorised Used Car from a BMW main dealer and they informed me all was in order. I tried to get them to do an Inspection 2 service for piece of mind but they said it was not necessary and the car was fine for another 7000 miles - it came with 12 months warranty.

Some of the more knowledgeable and experienced owners will make further comment I'm sure.

Good luck with your purchase.

Ok thanks.

Found out an oil change has been done in 2010 as well. In the 4 year gap from 06-10 the previous owner claims to have changed oil once as well but I have no way of knowing if that's true or not - but to me it seems stupid not to have serviced a rather expensive low milage car...

Unless there as a lack of Z4's where you are I would walk away and find another with better service history. You will have the same issues when you sell otherwise.

That's the problem. There are hardly any for sale here in Denmark - and none that has the 3.0 engine and steptronic combined with the color and equipment I want. I need to go to Germany to get one. The one in question is the only one that meets my demands for a Z4.

Although Z4 service intervals are long - isn't it good practice just to change oil every year? As doesnt oil have a shelf life? :fuelfire:

If it needed to be changed every year BMW would have it as a service schedule as they could easily make a lot more money.
