Service history crossroads

Hello all and a very happy new year!

I am at a cross roads with my MR and it's based on this forum/M owners versus Joe public...

My car has/had full BMW service history. Everything on time including oil and brake fluid. The reason I bought this example.

The last stamp in my book for an oil change, however, is from Norwich Sports and classics Ltd - the dealership I bought it from. If I put the car up for sale and the potential buyer asked about service history on here, what would your opinions be? FBMWSH or recent specialist?

I ask because the crossroad I talk about is £200 BMW cooper Croydon oil change (I always change oil every year) or BMSport £88 oil change... I will give the car what it needs, but that's two tanks of fuel if I'm already in the "specialist servicing" bracket.

Any and all opinions welcomed.
 
Jad, surely if you have an oil service stamp that is not from bmw you can't really say fbmwsh, it's just not? I would just explain it like you have done below.
Also if your last stamp was an oil service surely next should be either inspection 1 or 2? Why are you looking at putting another stamped oil service on there?
 
As Tom said you no longer have FBMWSH.

Next service could be oil though Tom, if the mileage hasn't been hit.
 
That's possible yes, but I think jad bought the car Dec 2014 so shouldn't be due a time based oil service?
 
My car fell out of the dealership network before I bought it, over 5 yrs ago, as I've posted previously I go to my friends garage, he's Universal, works on everything from Transits through to Aston Martin etc both him and his team are great mechanics, he looked after my 911 for 10yrs, all I'd want to know as a potential buyer would be that everything was in order, done intime and correctly, my car is 10 yrs old in March so it's no big deal to me :thumbsup:
 
I didnt know Norwich sport and classic actually had a repair garage.... thought it was just sales..

Anyway.....

£200 is too much really,although nice to see in the history book.... Is that just an oil change or oil service ? Sometimes you get cabin filters in that figure..

£88 is not a lot...... the oil and filter would be about £70, so when VAT gets involved they are working for nothing..


If i was you,i would try and negotiate a decent deal at the main dealer....

Tom, I'm not saying it is, chap - that's what I'm getting at. My father feels differently (one potential buyer as a fan of modern day classics). It had full dealership service history up until NS&C had it in and did an oil change, but that was fine by me. And it's not due, I just do very little mileage and change oil yearly regardless. Would rather be overly zealous with servicing than the opposite!

Counter on startup says 8995 miles or there abouts so the car isn't needing an inspection for at least another year with my annual mileage.

I was keen to hear from the likes of Tom, SR, Gaz above etc who I know will scrutinise any car that comes up for sale and advise buyers on here as such (certainly not in a negative way, gents!).

The don't Gaz, you're right, so it'll be whoever he uses.

I need to check the details as would presume that's just oil change, no microfilter etc so will make sure.
 
With such low miles covered many owners wouldn't even bother changing the oil ( i would be yearly or 5k ) & some would even suggest for interim oil change don't even stamp the book & definitely don't alter the on board service counter . Just keep a record yourself or receipt for the job done
 
Sorry jad, misunderstood you then. I guess if the last oil stamp was not required according to schedule then you can indeed say it has fbmwsh.
When you got the car was the mileage indicator reset when that additional oil service was done, I.e. Did it say 15 k miles to inspection (not oil service)? If so that's a shame as they shouldn't have really.
In any case it sounds like you have a pretty sound service history, and I'd agree just get an additional one done at your indy. Personally I don't stamp additional oil services I have had done over the required schedule in the book, I just keep the receipts for it.

Aye....

I dont like dealers who have had a stamp made up.... We recently did an M3 that the last 3 services where "car dealer" stamps had been used,it was a blatant "stamp the book up" manoeuvre,confirmed when i changed the filters that where 5 yrs old!!

IMHO it should have the garage who have done the work stamp on the service book.....

But then again im more than a bit picky... :x
 
Full servicing at a dealer has been very new to me with never really having a good car and never bothering about where it was serviced.
With bikes there are very few around with full service history as most people prefer to service their own bikes as they get better care that way.
This doesnt affect the value when selling the same way that it affects cars.

You and me both fella - but with this one it was a simple oil change, nothing more. Had it been insp1/2 by Alan's Autos I'd have been a lot more wary.

I usually see the following on sale posts:

'full dealer service history until XXXXX miles, then specialist servicing since'

That would satisfy me as a buyer. I know a good specialist are worth their weight in gold and would go as far as saying I'd rather give them my hard earned car and cash, than give it to a dealer who probably doesn't care about your second hand motor.

Missed this post. No need to apologise! Might be more the way I wrote the initial post.

Initial reading on start up was about 11k so don't think it was reset. 49k on the clock when it had insp2 and I got her at 53k so that makes sense.
