Service due - which dealer to choose?

Depending on how much you drive, 1500 miles can take a while to come around.

However, if you need a courtesy car then you'll have to give them a few weeks notice for them to have one available.

You can also 'go over' your inspection due mileage by about 1000 miles, so it may be that you don't need one for 3 months.

As for the MOT, check whether the dealership is the MOT test centre, or whether they get a local MOT tester in. If the former then they may use the MOT as an opportunity to 'create' work for themselves (i.e. warnings of 'unroadworthy' tyres, pads, discs when they actually mean they've still got half their life left), and if the latter you might as well take it to them direct and save a few quid.

If you don't use the warranty it's probably not worth main dealer but remember there will generally be a price impact come resale if you do go elsewhere...even if they are good.

Hidden council test centres - no repairs, so no incentive to fail. Some mechanics can be overzealous at fault-spotting, as it gains them lucrative repair business. Many councils have MOT centres for their own vehicles, which by law must open to the public - and our anecdotal feedback is people get far fewer failures. Use our Council MOTs map to find your local one.

I was told that on my first mot there was an allowance for any work that had to be done to get it through. Is this not part of the 12 month warranty issued by BMW?

Just thought I'd add on the Main dealer v indie servicing debate. If you're planning on keeping the car until failure go Indie, If you're planning on selling it or px in the none to distant, stick with dealer.

Main reason is (if we're being brutally honest) which would you rather buy? A car with a book full of main dealer stamps or the one with indies? It might well work out that bit more expensive but come sell time, it will make shifting it easier.

Plus if you want a BMW warranty I think they want dealer stamps on the system (I could be wrong there).
