Service charges

For those of you that have been keeping up  I bought my '04 2.5 @ 93815 miles on 17 July 2013.

When I picked her up the selling agent "claimed" to have done both an oil service and an Inspection 1, (well, they ticked both in the service book) which is [as far as I can make out] oil, oil filter, and pollen filter.

Oil is clean, so that looks to have been done, I can only "assume" the filter was changed, and I haven't checked the pollen filter.

I have since, myself, changed the air filter as it was filthy.

According to the service book, a local reputable BMW Indi did an Inspection 2 @ 54227 on 28/05/08, an oil service @ 70334 on 13/03/09 and an Inspection 1 @ 85689 on 05/01/2010 - the next entry is the selling agent.

I haven't done many miles since, so now it's only = 95721, and the display says I don't need an "Inspection" for another 13350 miles!

But, I'm not convinced :o

The book says:-

Oil Service = change engine oil and filter, and air-con micro filter [plus at every 3rd OS change air filter & fuel filter - at additional cost :x ] and check brakes

Inspection 1 = as OS + check this and that, + change brake fluid as appropriate [another additional cost :x ]

Inspection 2 = as Inspection 1 + renew air filter and plugs. [and one quote incl. fuel filter]

So my dilemma is, should I have an Inspection done now, and if so which one? And what's the cost? I've got quotes from a couple of local Indi's and the main dealer, which differ wildly [one indi has quoted £76 (+vat) more for a 2 from a 1 - just for plugs and an air-filter? They are having a laugh! :x ]

So, finally, :) my questions...

do I need a service?
should I have a service for piece of mind?
which one?
how much should I expect to pay for each?

Thanks.

Distance based servicing will give you approx 13-15k between services. If you don't hit this mileage in 2 years then you have an oil service and get an inspection service done when you hit the miles.

If you want a service now just an oil will do. Inspection 2 then approx 13-15k later.

So her last inspection was over 4 years and 10000 miles ago, and as I'm not sure what oil / filter was used recently, it suggests to me that I should [for peace of mind at the very least] get an Inspection 1 sorted?

£40 oil
£7 oil filter
50p sump washer
£15 cabin filter
£80 2 hrs labour with full car check over
£142.50 total

Above +

£48 ptip plugs
£12 air filter
£5 brake fluid change
£80 2 hr labour
£145 sub total

£287.50 total

Aux belts £80 fitted extra

Approx based on mood :p

You'll need a brake fluid change every 2 years no matter what mileage, has this been done? Cost me £72 by main dealer which was pretty good value IMO. Have a browse through 'dealer feedback' section should give you and idea on costs that may help make your mind up on the cost of 'peace of mind'.

If your not 100% sure for peace of mind get an oil change but if the brake fluid hasn't been done you might want to get that done too! Better to be safe than sorry. I know it's a bugger but I wouldn't be happy knowing something might not be right

If you are worried just get an oil service and brake fluid if that hasn't been done for two years. Items in inspection one that haven't been changed in four years won't be an issue. You could always change the air and pollen filters yourself.

I only do 2-4k pa so my car will go 6 years between inspections, although oil and brake fluid is changed every two years.
