Service Book

When I purchased my E89 from a BMW main dealer it did not come with a service book, they told me its all on the key these days, so I did not need it, When I took my car in to have some warranty work done recently at my local BMW dealer, they asked me where my service book was, so I repeated what I was told when I bought it, and they said I should really contact the dealer I Purchased it off and get one.

I just wondered if the information I am being told by either dealer is right?

From what I gather, information is stored on the key, but there should also be a book with a service record.

How would you prove the service history to anyone without a BMW key reader otherwise?

Yes that was my thought

Does anybody know for sure that all previous services are stored on the key or does it just show what services are due in the future? i.e what the onboard computer shows when scrolling through.
If it does I would imagine that the key would also only show the main services, the ones that show up on the onboard comp and not any extra services like extra oil changes and stuff.

My Sept 2016 (Z4) has a service book - Ive just looked and the dealer didn't stamp it!
Our July 2015 335xd does not have a service book.

I think on more recently released models it's stored on the I-drive.

Interesting question about what is stored on the key - if it's only the next due dates that's no use for historical details.

I'd much rather have a book anyway (back-up for a hard drive failure).

If you know where it went (and better still when) my recent experience with my E91 with 2 main agents was very positive - both were happy to tell me what work was done, and one offered to stamp the book for a full service they did that wasn't in the book.

I've had to ask them to stamp the service book when mines been in for servicing.

I had the same thing, I just rang the dealer that bought the car who admitted losing it. They replaced it and stamped it up for me from the electronic car history.
