Serious problem - unhealthy appetite for oil

The puff of oil on initial start up is classic valve stem oil seal failure.. The reason it did it is that the oil will seep into the bores irrelevant of changing the oil or not..

This is an interesting thread thats worth a read..

But the one & only time ever I witnessed this right after the oil was drained/refilled, not seen it prior or since, I'm a bit paranoid about this & have been starting the car & checking for it, bearing in mind that this car isn't my DD & can sit idle for 7-10 days so plenty of time for the oil to work it's way past the seals & drip on top of the piston(s).`

If this does turn out ultimately to be valve stem seals then I assume this is a mega-bucks job to sort? :(

Ah...

Thought it often did the "mornin smoke" thing...

Ok.... Like i said earlier in the thread, its either gonna be breather system, rings or valve seals... So,if the breather system checks out then its exploratory work in the engine,so head off and pistons out= expensive.

There are a few products available that may help your cause of it is carbon on the rings...BG44k is about the best you can get to try and free up carbon deposits..

I suppose anything is worth a try...

I'll email Sopers re the cost of a CCV & associated pipes as I understand these can go brittle, is the CCV a DIY job to replace?

I'll just mention for completeness that the engine pinks sometimes & the exhaust looks dark & sooty to me, yet the average fuel consumption is 33ish mpg, don't know if this is relevant to the oil issues.
