Selling your car? Beware of this scam

As some may have seen im selling our family Hyundai Getz on here and a few other places (mainly eBay and Gumtree).

I received a phone call (private number) this afternoon from some young sounding chap proclaiming to be the police. He asked if I was selling the car I said yes and proceeded to tell me it was stolen.

As such the police would have to come and seize the vehicle. At this stage he asked where the vehicle was and I knew it was a scam and hung up.

I dont have the plates on the pictures of my car so how they could tell it was stolen is just impossible..

Just an FYI as some people (not on this forum) may actually fall for this, especially elderly folk I bet.

Thanks. Next time arrange a meeting (not at home) and call the police. In fact I'd call the non emergancy police number anyway and tell them what happened as it would be really easy from them to trap such a scammer with a fake ad or two. I'd also contact ebay and gum tree so they could place a warning on the site.

The police don't ring to tell you that they turn up on your door and wait until you get home from work! You then get the comical "Excuse me sir is this your car" and when you say "yes" they smirk - apologies to any police here, I made that last bit up.

Yes, I have bought a stolen car, once, many years ago, luckily with the help of the local police I managed to get my money back from the "stealer" who sold it to me. I consider myself extremely lucky.

Andi.
