selling a Zed and social distancing...

Mornin all.

Has anyone sold a car (or read anything about selling/buying privately) whilst social distancing advice/measures are in place?

Unfortunately I'm being made redundant. So my lovely little Zed will have to go. I'd planned to keep it for a good while (spent a bl**dy small fortune on it!), but i can't justify keeping it ..

I'm thinking about a way around the social distancing advice in regard to the inevitable test drive. I thought i read somewhere that you can 'carshare' as long as all the windows are open and you dont look at each other. Is that the case? I guess thats doable in a convertible! :)

I'm thinking out loud here... any suggestions?

when i sold my car, the buyer left me the full asking price in cash, and took the car out on his own. he went on a 20 minute test drive, while i counted the money (id said in advance i wasnt haggling)

when he came back, he just said 'yep thats fine' left me the money, and i gave him all the paperwork, and new keeper slip. and then did the change of ownership with the DVLA online.

though my car was on the cheap side, might have done things differently if it was north of £5k. but yeah, you really cannot maintain safe social distancing in a small 2 seater roadster.
 
You could add a face mask and rubber gloves to. Sanitize the steering wheel and gearstick before and after.
Whereabouts in Kent are you ?

that sounds like the perfect sale, if only all sales were like that! :)

I guess i'd have to be picky as to what sanitiser i used? i wouldnt want to damage the leather...
I'm just outside Margate.

Unless the buyer is concerned (elderly and/or sickly) I wouldn’t worry about it !

Just heard on the radio yesterday that the CDC (US Center for Disease Control) and the WHO said the mortality rate of those contracting the virus is 0.23 percent.

Just did an Internet search and couldn’t find that exact number but found lots of articles that had very low numbers. It was originally predicted to kill 1 to 2 million in America...last number I heard was 140K.

It seems to be the biggest concern for those 70 and over with comorbidities. So sick old folks probably don’t want to buy your car anyway.

Of course you have to do what you are comfortable with but personally I am trying to live my life as close to normal as TPTB will graciously allow!
 
You stick it up for sale OP like i did 4 weeks ago with my own car & if someone wants to view / inspect / testdrive / buy & you are happy too then just crack on with it .
A guy in his early 30s called me about mine , he asked my thoughts on him viewing it with regards the CV situation , i wasn't concerned , he wasn't concerned so he drove around 6 hrs roundtrip & bought the car . Life must go on :wink:
 
Do everything possible to minimise/avoid contact...

to put it into perspective, you could do everything by the book when you pop to Tesco’s (other supermarkets are available!)... but how do you know who’s touched the loaf of bread or container of milk you’ve put in your basket?

I bought my latest Z a couple of weeks ago and the chap wasn’t in the least bit concerned and he was in the ‘at risk’ group in terms of age, also looked fit and healthy and had a race bike with 240BHP at the rear tire... so guessing he wasn’t overly concerned about his mortality!

I wore a face mask, took sanitiser etc though... and paid by BT to avoid physically counting cash out. If anything, I was more cautious than the older chap :?

That a good idea. But remember to put a fairly large slit in the bubble wrap just behind your arse. That'll keep the flies away from your face.
 
Sorry to hear you’re having to sell OP. I recently bought my first Zed privately. I left my keys with the owner, took the car for a good drive and paid using my phone. We kept 2 metres apart at all times. Haggled a little. Happy seller and buyer. But to be honest, a similar drill, less a handshake, that I’ve used before to sell.

I’d press ahead and just make sure you have some equity from anyone test driving. GLWTS :thumbsup:
 
I sold me Z3 right when this whole BS was beginning. The Governor of our state had closed notary businesses so though he wanted to buy the car (and gave me a deposit) we could not seal the deal and transfer the car to him. I guess it was probably close to 2 months before he was able to take ownership of the car.

My point in posting though is that we took the test drive together with the top down. If anyone thinks they are going to transfer a virus while driving along with the top down they are waaaay too paranoid.

I know he was a little hesitant to talk on my phone when I handed it to him so he could speak to the notary, however he did. We did literally shake hands on the deal when he picked up the car.

Personally I am not afraid of contracting this virus but I can, to some extent, understand those who are.

I have seen idiots over here driving around by themselves wearing a mask, jogging, by themselves, wearing a mask...Can you say "sheeple" ?

Bought my sport coupe during lockdown as I was near the car working so easy to have a look in Tesco car park, funny I have not seen the car for 3 weeks as a slight noise attributed to the diff started but on inspection the diff is fine maybe get the car back today it did get new planet gears as they were a bit worn it won’t change the noise but because I was made aware of it I had them changed...car will be for sale soon as I’m just fine in my new van :rofl:

Just stay your distance, bank transfer, hpi it, or better still arrange a vehicle inspection it might be the best £150 you ever spend.
