Seeking advice, please, concerning the likely difference in the Z4 35is - was there an upgraded version created circa 2013

I am seeking advice, please in regards to the Z435is,... were there a number of changes circa 2013?

Purely from memory Mad, from 2013 onwards the paddles changed from the rubbish push push each side to left for downshifting, right for upshifting, new design gear selector, reflectors in the rear bumper moved position, headlights went to xenon’s, that’s about it but not 100% sure on the lights and there’s probably something I’ve missed but I think that’s generally all the changes.

John-e89 many thanks for your prompt response which is much appreciated. I have paid a deposit on a 2013 Z4 35is and am thinking I have made an error in judgement. It wasn't until this evening when I came to realise that I may have made the decision to possibly have agreed to purchase the wrong car; prior to this I had understood that the 35is had proper paddle shifts and am beginning to think that should the car not have the paddle shifts I would probably regret purchasing it.

I think circa 2014 you got the facelift - so the same changes as for every other e89. New indicators on the side, better headlights with pure white angel eyes, a couple of other minor differences - other than the lights, nothing big.

The pull pull paddle change was earlier I think - but again - easy to retro fit, they just drop straight in & don't need any recoding. You can see if your car has the upgraded paddles just by having a quick look (or share a pic). Small silver rectangle visible = old paddle style - big black paddle = new style.

No huge changes for the 35is from 2009 all the way through to 2016 - just a few minor tweaks here & there.

You can retro fit the indicators easily for cheap, and the headlights can be 50% of the way there with new bulbs.

I wouldn;t worry if the car is in good shape, no reason not to get a 2013 IMHO.

Matsmith749, many thanks for your kind response,... I'm usually more conscientious than I have been in this instance; I have paid a quite substantial deposit on the car and now have a huge degree of remorse. This apart, and from your detailed response, it would seem that it would be a reasonably easy task to change the buttons to paddle shifts. No doubt it seems rather odd not to have checked the car more comprehensively,... the dealer was very well behaved such that he left me alone with the car for quite some time. He did take me out for a reasonable distance. However, I did not drive the car and was happy to be an observing passenger noting how it ran etc. Many thanks again for your kind reply.

All E89s had xenons, from 2009 to end of production.

The facelift was in early 2013 (all '13' plates onward will generally be lci) and was common to all E89s; which were minor things like LED halos and the 'tick' side indicator embellishments. Don't recall anything specific to the 35is, though.

I'll add in there that for the interior you got a shiny surround for the iDrive screen and also around the air vents. No other differences inside.

Pondrew and AnubiZed, thank you for your input in regards to the difference betwixt the 35is up to model-year 2013 inter alia the model years up to 2016. I am thinking that I need to gain more knowledge on the paddle shift levers on the later model; but I also note that the 'Ici' has been mentioned but have no knowledge of this. I am in a quandary!

2012 MY the paddle shifters changed, as stated 2023 the LCI took place with minor dash trim change, revised headlights with LED DRLs and the teardrop repeater on the flank.

On the N54 a number of iterations of the injectors took place from pre index 9 to index 12

N54 HPFP was revised numerous times

Numerous iterations of the tail lights to address cracking and leaking ..a major internal change in 2012

You don’t need any buyers remorse Mad, if the cars good then these subtle changes are just that, subtle, there’s nothing major, and as has been said you can change the side repeaters for later ones, don’t get too hung up on the rear lights, yes some cars have issues but as an eg, my 09 35i is still on its original lights at 126k miles and I’ve had no problems, they don’t all leak. Pic shows the early push / push paddle on the left, right the later pull / pull paddle, you can change to the later paddles very easily as Mattsmith says.

Don’t be disheartened, there’s no need to be, pretty much everything can be changed to the later LCI car’s easily. 👍

B21, thank you for your kind response which is greatly appreciated,... I can gauge from your response that you are quite clearly hugely knowledgeable concerning the manifold aspects of the 35is,... for myself, I am wholly at the opposite end of the 35is spectrum of knowledge, hence I am presently in such a dilemma over the acquisition of the 2013 model year 35is upon which I have placed a substantial deposit.

And yes, I do now realise that I should have performed in depth research prior to making the decision to purchase the machine. However, in the modern idiom, 'it is what it is' hence I am now performing my best endeavours with the kind assistance of yourself and other gentlemen on this forum who are doing their very best to assist me in extricating myself from the circumstances within which I now found myself. Essentially, I am presently thinking that potentially I may have made a most regrettable mistake.

May you advise me, please, what LCI is. What the LED DRLs and the teardrop repeater on the flank may be. And when you refer to the N54 and a number of iterations of the injectors which took place from pre index pre index 9 to index 12.

Also, would you be able to advise a layman such as myself what N54 HPFP is and perhaps why it has been revised numeorus times. Seemingly, there has been numerous iterations of the tail lights to address cracking and leaking whereupon there was a major internal change in 2012. This notwithstanding, the model year of motor car upon which I have placed a substantial deposit is a 2013 model such that I am now beginniing to think some of the issues be they of serious, or not so serious nature may have been resolved. From this you will gauge that my perception of the motor car is now looking rather more positive from when I placed the Thread yesterday eventide when I was in a state of progressive despair.

Once again, may I request, please, that you and all others that have so far proffered detailed information 'Accept My Very Best Thanks for the pantagruelian generosity of spirit and altruism that has exuded from this Forum.

John-89, I wasn't aware of your latest response when responding to B21 and therefore wish to express my most sincere appreciation for providing such clear photo-images of the disparity in the two forms of the steering wheel gear changing facility which has and is, my overriding concern. Thank you.

Where are you from Z4MAD? the 1920s? I feel like I'm in the middle of a Jane Austin novel reading your posts :)

Get over it, if the car is strong be happy. All these small bits can be changed if they bother you, none are hugely expensive.

The truth is that any used car purchase will want a few tweaks by the new owner - that's just the way it is with any new-to-you vehicle.

Set aside a few hundred quid to make it exactly how you would like it & you will be fine.

Oh dear I hope it’s not another MAD the last one was bad enough 😂

The BMW designation LCI stands for Life Cycle Impulse. It is a term developed by BMW that represents the mid-cycle updates it gives certain models.

LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) are bright, low-wattage LED lights designed to enhance a vehicle's visibility during daylight hours

The teardrop repeaters are the newer style side indicators, chrome with an extended leg on the bottom as opposed to the off white opaque ones originally fitted.
Fuel injectors were revised over several years starting at rev 9 and ending on the current rev 12
HPFP, High Pressure Fuel Pump

The motor car of which I am presently ruminating has after-market-wheels. The vendor has agreed to change them for original BMW Z4 five-double-spoke-wheels with a diameter of nineteen inches.

I would advise that prior to crossing the rubicon therefom to gain entry into this cyber cathedral of BMW Z4 adroitness and more particularly the E89 BMW with the nomenclature of 35is located as it is within the inner temple of the cathedral of motoring nirvana set far into the hinterlands of the other side of the Universe I had, perchance when continuing upon my odyssey stumbled upon a temple-of-wheels. Within this temple with an infinite compendium of knowledge and expertise I had become alerted to the replacement wheels that are to be fitted to the BMW Z4 35is, this has caused me to yet again set upon a course of wheel rumination. The reason for which, it would appear that there are wheels manifold in their disparity and whilst appearing similar, do not necessarily comply with the necessary precision of the original equipment.

The immediately herebefore written, has caused me to engage upon a third bout of rumination such that it has brought forth another question for my newly found friends and fellow aficionado's of the E89 35is, therefore I would advise that I am now to present another enquiry of which I should be most appreciative of an answer,... my final enquiry is: Does the BMW Z4 35is have similarly sized wheels and tyres as the BMW Z4 35i ,... I would hasten to add and would again confirm that the machine of which I am becoming ever closer to holding within my tutela has nineteen inch wheels.

I thank you all in eager anticipation of your kind responses and in concluding would advise that for the sake of utmost clarity and completeness I would confirm that I am indeed the original Z4 MAD and yes, I do realise that perhaps I am a little different, but surely this forum is sufficiently egalitarian to find room for a personage that some may identify as an anachronism, which may I clearly state I am perfectly happy to be of this more than happy disposition.

Chippie, I note that you too are the custodian of a BMW 35is painted in Space Grey with Kansas Coral Red Leather interior. I would advise that the motoring device which I am still hoping to acquire (subject to the correct steering wheel gear-selection-device and road wheels) is painted Melbourne Red with creamy beige upholstery.

I have yet to receive responses concerning whether there is any disparity betwixt the wheels on the BMW E89 Z4 35i and the BMW E89 Z4 35is. The reason for which is because I wish to make absolutely certain that the Melbourne Red machine has the correct wheels fitted.

If and when the Melbourne Red device arrives (presently set for Friday of this coming week) I shall require a nominee to place photo-images within the annals of this Forum. No doubt there will be immense competition for the honour of performing this one-in-a lifetime opportunity and therefore would request, please, whether you would be so kind as to vicariously act as my emissary in selecting the most suitable candidate.

I shall also be seeking your advocacy thus to present the inhabitants of this Forum with full details of the registration number plates that they believe would be best suited to the herebefore mentioned device of what I hope to be the epitome of motoring nirvana. There will be a choice of two registration numbers. I am thinking there will be a MAD rush to acquire tickets for this momentous occasion. Do you think it should be on a first come, first served basis; or perhaps we could set up a 'Tombola' and make an even more substantial charge for the tickets. I am thinking that the proceeds will enable me to become a fully-paid-up-member of the Z4-Forum. Should this plan fail, I shall, nonetheless, still make a contribution to the Forum from the Old Age Pensioner - Fuel Allowance Payment which the Prime Minister of this Realm has so far denied me the privilege of becoming such an wholly well deserving recipient.

I thank you for your most kind attention in this matter and shall await to hear from you in due course.

Post Script: May I be advised, please, as to the likely subscription fee for membership of this most illustrious of Forums?
