Very interesting project Quadracer! Keep in mind that limited slip differentials sometimes whine and/or grind a bit during use. Not sure how the Quaife compares in that regard though. The M diff sometimes grinds a bit during parking speeds. Also keep in mind that the addition of a LSD will probably induce some understeer during corner entry if you're tracking the car.

What tyres are you thinking about?
I've found the car already understeers into corners but is very easy to control. I'm hoping when it snaps into oversteer the LSD will help get the power down. I've booked into Bird for Tuesday afternoon next week to have the Quaife fitted, then I'll drive over to Snetterton to try it out on Wednesday.
I've been thinking about changing the run flats to Continental sport contact 5.

Most of the understeer is the camber at the back. You can notch this down to induce a little more overall grip, at the expense of course that the rear may be a bit more snappy. BMW do excessive camber this way for road users that 'think' they can drive, understeer saves lives lol.

I changed out the run flats about 3 weeks ago on my 35iS to Michelin PSS and havent looked back. Great tire, quite good grip and the cornering, turn in and steering feedback is noticeably improved. As for the tune the 35iS has enough power as is here in Switzerland I couldn't fathom any more, all it would do it put me at an even greater risk of speeding than I already am at.

I am having my tyres changed tomorrow to Michelin Supersports so I'll let you know the differnce if any over the weekend.

Vail, do you find the ride (on rough roads/over manhole covers) has improved a lot/a little/any?

Ride on rough roads are quieter and softer. The pothole crashing sound you get with RFT are gone complacently. In its place is a mild thump when you hit a pot hole, a bit louder than hitting a catseye but not intrusive at all. I would never go back to RFTs and decided to get a bmw emergency tire kit and keep it in the trunk instead.

That pothole crashing reduced to thump thing may just sway me into keeping this car as its the number one thing I hate about it. After nearly 3 years of painful bangs as I clip missing road surface, I'd keep the car if I knew that would go away somewhat and I could drive just like everyone else.

I only had RFT on my car for 300KM max and that was enough. If you have a chance swap to PSS and grab an emergency kit from the dealer. You will thank me later.

The Michelin Pilot Supersports are on :)
Been for a hoon this afternoon and what a difference.....

Braking - A huge difference- stopping distance is shorter and the ABS is not engaging every time I brake hard. In fact I had to brake extremely hard to check the ABS was still working.

Accelerating - I was a little disappointed to start with because I was getting more wheel spin. Into an empty private car park for some fun and rough the newness off clockwise and anticlockwise a couple of dozen times and the tyres changed quickly. Back on the road and yes, more grip but also was pleased acceleration was a lot smoother with no judder when loosing grip.

Cornering - Both understeers and oversteer are reduced and the grip is noticeably better with more confidence in roundabouts especially when it rained later in the day. I was worried about what they would be like in the wet but I am more than happy.

Ride - Tell me again why BMW fit run flats? The Zed feels more like my X5, in fact, no word of a lie, I kept checking I had it in Sports Plus thinking I'd left it in Comfort. Potholes are to longer are worry. The Tees Viaduct is a mile of expansion joints which previously fealt like the car was shaking to bits at 70mph and I tried to avoid it but today no better or worse than any other car.

Verdict -

^^^^^^^^
Really glad you like the new tyres. The missus has these on the 1M and I think they are great.

Can't wait now to do this myself.

What sizes did you put on? As far as I remember the PSS don't come in the same size as OEM.

I was looking for Sport Cup Plus but couldn't get the correct size.
PSS 19" Front 225-35 and rear 255-30 same as OEM for my car.

It was £450. You can tell the difference a lot at higher speeds but at low down speeds it makes it worse. You have to be more gentle to keep all the dreaded orange lights from flashing and grip the wheel a lot tighter. I'm going to Bird later in the month to have the Quaife fitted and changing the tyres so that should sort that out.

I didn't realise that none of the E89s came with a mechanical LSD :o

Liking the look of these :)

I prefer the OEM wheels in your sig pic - spend the money on improving the handling, then you really will have an ///M dressed as a sheep

You get what you pay for... oh no, wait a minute, these cars cost a small fortune and don't some with something quite essential!

Arrived at Bird this morning and my Zed is currently in the workshop having the front brakes changed and Quaife diff fitted :)

Great pic... I wonder how your car feels having its back legs pulled off ;)
I haven't felt like this for over 18 years. That was when my wife went into labour with our daughter
