Security update non E89

As I can only see a thread on the E89 referring to the security update

My 08 120d and 07 Z4 both require the security update

Called my Dealer this am and they confirmed both are within the specified Vin #

?!? Only cars with radio keys should require the update.. How are they going to clone a physical key like that on the e85/6?

Rather unlikely don't you think

The Z4 is recalled from Mar 2007 build and the 120d similar "quote"

They are my Dealer and surprisingly check the vin # with BMW and need each car for about an hour and update is software

The receptionist was sitting with the Electrical Technician when she called me back and said that my Z4 was right on edge

But what do they know but I will tell them they have it wrong and save a trip with one car

No need to be defensive.. The software update is to prevent key cloning .. You can't clone a physical metal key from the odb port! We've all experienced the dealers that seemingly know it all.. They don't!

I asked them the question if either cars needed an upgrade
they know my cars, phoned me back and said both need an (the ) update
Specifically said Z4 fell just inside the vin # selection so I am hardly going to argue with them

They clearly had checked so thanks for the input and no need to be cute about radio v metal keys I am familiar with the difference

My goodness you are all right BMW Dealers do not know what they are doing neither it seems do BMW themselves
I have just come of the phone and they insist there is a recall and is DATE based and NOT key Type
However I have told them they are talking rubbish and the smart a**es on the Z4 Forum know far better

SO FOR ANY E85/E86 owner with a Sept 07 on build car don't bother to call the hotline where they will not confirm the car and not send send an email
to your Dealer to contact you to bring it in

The number you don't want to bother to call is 0800 083 4397

Oh and for the technically minded and the smart a**es it is NOT KEY RELATED BUT a OBD and software issue as I thought

Nice post/reply, thanks for that :o

From what I know the software fix is OBD related, however the root issue is that the OBD port allows a read of the required information to write into a new radio-type key. Allowing you to drive the car away without having the original radio-key. The update allows a read of this data only with the original radio-key in the car at the time. Meaning that without the original key, a new one cannot be made by the kit the thieves are using. I've confirmed this with the dealer.

This was the e89 recall to which you mention at the start of this thread. There is also now an additional update for all cars after a certain year to enhance security that encrypts OBD communication further.

The post Heading says exactly NON E89 ,which means nothing to do with E89( nor did I mention the radio key in any)
However you decided to jump on the wagon and have a little p*ss take
Nothing has changed from my original post so frankly :telloff:

In future in attempted put downs do your homework first

Far be it from me to quote your original post;

"As I can only see a thread on the E89 referring to the security update

Where you mention the e89 update and mention that your other cars 'require the update'.

Seriously though, chill out. So wires may have been crossed, its a public forum.. but hey, if it makes you feel better, you win, you are the champ, your trophy is in the post.

Over and out...

I could imagine that late model E85/6s could have the same OBD software as E89, thus end up on the update list. But even with compromised software, a thief will have a hard time emulating a mechanical key with only their laptop. The question is, is it worth the bother to get the update considering the car is not at risk? Are there any other improvements involved with the update? The usual rule with firmware updates is if you're not having issues, don't update.
