Does anyone know if there is a fix for the theft issue concerning 2005-09 cars,where the keys are reprogrammed.
 
Best to ask your dealer. I believed it was only for radio key equipped cars but was shot down for saying so on here when someone else asked their dealer and apparently there is also an update for a vulnerability unrelated to the radio key issue.

Correct
BMW say all "08 model year " plus cars need updating .My Dealer had my 07 Z4 in to check on the update system as the vin was borderline but was as they expected outside the required Vin
The 08 120d did require the updates
The BMW helpline is 0800 083 4397
They will determine if car requires any attention and will then advise your chosen Dealer and the Dealer will then invite you to have the work done
It is a BMW decision not Dealer so call the number above

Only effects some BMW models with the electronic key. The E85/6 has an old fashioned key so is not affected.
 
As said above, this will not affect the Z with key ignition. My 5 series is vooked in to have it done next week. Am just hoping they don't wipe the engine remap!
 
There seems to be two trains of thought going on. E85/6s have mechanical keys so are thus unaffected by a radio key security issue. BMW says 2008 cars have a security issue despite the mechanical key.

Since the 90's (?) mechanical keys alone were not considered secure any more and key transponder systems started appearing in cars in greater numbers. So despite the mechanical key, E85/6s also have an electronic key of sorts in the transponder system. If BMW says my transponder system is insecure, I would want it fixed, even if I had a mechanical system serving as a first line of defense.

I'm not sure if or how there is a relationship between '08 E85/6s and E89s and other electronic key BMWs. I am sure having a mechanical key is reassuring in this situation. I don't think it's a bad thing to call the BMW help line to confirm whether an update is needed to the transponder system, mechanical key or not. Provided of course your car falls in the range of affected cars listed in their press releases.

As I've said it's only the electronic key cars that are affected, otherwise all E46 would also be an issue along with E39s

It also doesn't affected early E90 or early 1 series which all use electronic keys.
 
I phoned the BMW security hotline and got mine (after about 2 months) picked up by Specialist Cars in Luton to do the software update. They then called and said that because it has the conventional key it isn't subject to this particular vulnerability so there was nothing to do. Bizarre that they couldn't have established that from the chassis number before bokking it in.....

:rofl: Eejits. I gave them the benefit of doubt in case there was some issue that we were unaware of in the transponder system with mechanical keys. Lot of good that did me. :oops: I'm much more comfortable with srhutch saying this has nothing to do with E85/6s. That actually makes sense, as opposed to some secret software update.
