*Secondary Air Pump code

Evening all,

Had an engine light come on at the weekend and it threw up the following:

P0492 - Secondary air injection system, insufficient flow bank 2

Advice on the best way to get to the bottom of the secondary air pump issues guys?

Thanks!!

Now, I have assumed this to be a Lambda sensor (because, let's face it, that wouldn't be remotely surprising). However, with there being 4 sensors, I'm unsure which one I actually need to replace. How am I supposed to know if it's pre or post cat?

Thanks!!

Hi Phil,
Not sure why you're assuming that's a lamda sensor going as it describes an issue with the secondary air pump? You'll get different codes for your lamda sensors, well at least mine were, and told you whether it was pre/post cat issue (but not which one of the 2 either side). I would check your pump is working (on cold start up) and that there is no leak in the pipe coming from it which runs to the valve (runs above the manifolds so will get brittle over time), then check hose running from the valve.
To be honest the secondary air pump does naff all (there really for emissions on cold start), you could just remove and code it out if you wanted to.

That's a great point Tom, and a really inaccurate assumption by me! :|

Best way to test the secondary air pump, Tom? Simple as turning the car on cold and feeling whether the pump springs to life?

Yes exactly, should run for about a minute or so, quite loud. My guess it's a hose leak, £10 or so fix I'd imagine if so :)

I've never heard my SAP.

RPI's ?

You should be able to hear/feel it for the 1st minute of cold start with the bonnet up. It pumps a fair amount of air through the exhaust system.

I will check this when I'm home next week. Hopefully it's just a split hose or something like that and not the pump itself. Thanks Tom.
