Secondary Air Injection

Recently had the Inspection II done on my 2.5 Z4 and about 250 miles later the "Check Engine Soon" light came on. The OBD II says this is a P0411 which translates to "Secondary Air Injection Incorrect Upstream Flow Detected". Can somebody please tell me what this is all about? Where do I find the Secondary Air Injection system/diagram or how can I fix it or do I have to take it back to the shop???

Thanks for your help.. Ghianut

It might be this:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BT33&mospid=47798&btnr=11_3419&hg=11&fg=50

This is the secondary air pump. It only runs for 90secs after engine start.

I will do some more research..

Many thanks shipkiller! I looked at the parts breakdown but never could find the emission controls. I suspected that the pump was the one front left in the engine compartment and I still suspect that it's probably just a loose connection someplace. I'll keep looking.

These computers are too new fangled for me. How do I post my Zed pictures?

What part of the US are you in?

This is my Z4. I call it my MG TF 1600 Twin Cam on steroids. My wife named if the Blue Angel but usually it's just Old Blue. Wonderful car, outstanding performance and it will beat anything Steve McQueen ever drove.

We're in northern Washington, north of Seattle/Bremerton. So far north the closest BMW dealer is in B.C.

Dang it, just saw a thread regarding the Secondary Air Injector the other day, and I cannot remember where :headbang: The gist of the thread advise to replace a valve (guessing similar to a PCV valve) every 30k miles. This valve may be what is throwing the code. Good luck! :)

Nice, you used the wrong reference for your picture.

Use the url in the IMG Code block

Try these links. They are for the E46 and are mostly the same..

Hey Shipkiller, you going to do a DIY for the Vanos seal replacement? :? :poke:

Nope..

This procedure it the best I have ever seen. http://www.beisansystems.com/procedures/vanos_procedure.htm

I do have a slight Vanos problem. The engine does some slight surging at 3k rpm or above.

I have bought the updated seals from the above site and all the extra seals (Valve cover, Vanos and accociated O-Rings. They should be here next week.. Just have to find the time over the next few weeks.

I can do this in the driveway...

It seems from all the research I have done in the last few days, indicates ALL BMW's up to 2005 suffer from this fate.

Thanks for all the help. I apologize for using the wrong reference for the picture. I'm more than a little confused right now, doing taxes via Turbo Tax. I don't know whether to wind my ass or scratch my watch.

I erased the P0411 code after after I checked and refitted the hose connections on the air pump. The car only has 29294 miles on it even though it's an '03. Can't believe the pump could go out that quickly.

Had a similar problem on the 325E and it was the way the various hoses and tubes connected.

I'll let you know if the light comes back on and I need to replace the air pump.

As the sign in the VW dealer's parts department said when the Air Force sent me to Georgia, "Livin cain't be simple eny more, they's too many gadgets."

Thanks again.

Well, the check engine light came back on.

I puIled the secondary air pump and sure enough, it did not run, only clicked. I ordered a new secondary air pump on Saturday from BMWpartsonly and received it on Tuesday by DHS from Florida. Excellent service! but I asked for a Hella part as advertised but got a Pierburg like the OEM instead. It was installed and operational within 30 minutes and works perfectly, no problems.

Thanks again for all the diagnostic help. The "stealer advisor" just said bring it in it could be the O2 sensor or it could be the Vanos. I told them the error code but that made no difference to the "advisor". Back to DIY!

After 222 miles from 3/11/08 to 5/31/08 the engine popped once when I started it and the secondary air pump went out again! The first time it quit I ordered a Hella replacement because Pierburg was the OEM. BMWPartsOnly said it was a Hella part but when I received it it was really a Pierburg. I emailed BMWPartsOnly about the discrepancy but they never replied. Maybe they figure "Parts is Parts".

How do the rest of you keep these cars together? Ghianut

I may be too late on this, but you have to check the relay that runs it. Mine was fused closed, so it wouldn't shut off. So check the relay before you order another one. Also check the checkvalve assembly connected to the airpump. the mechanic that diagnosed this for me the first time said he'd seen it a number of times on 325s, but not on the Z4 which they rarely get in their shop. Mine's done this twice in 64K miles.

Hi Yal,

Okay, I give up. Where is the relay for the secondary air injection pump? After the first post on the air pump I replaced the pump in the spring of 2008. Shortly after that, in June, the pump went out again so I replaced the pump and the valve. Now, for the third time the pump went out again and I only have about 3500 miles on the second pump!

I disassembled the second air pump and the brushes are fried on one side and the plastic plate the brushes are mounted on is melted away where the brushes were crimped on to the plate. Something is terribly wrong with this supplier Pierburg to make such flimsy motors for this BMW!

Thanks for your help.
