Second hand parts.....your thoughts?

So I was recently the victim of the dreaded ABS light etc coming on in my Z and after a lot of messing around I found that it is damaged beyond repair n there is no communication with the diagnostic systems so basically it needs replacing and in trying to avoid a £1,300 bill from bmw I'm on the search for a second hand part but my question is, if this is a common bmw fault and I buy and have a second hand part fitted and programmed will it be only a matter of time before it happens again with the second hand part?

Does anyone have any experience of replacing this part second hand? Or should I bite the bullet and just buy a new part?
 
I got a second hand one - it was £280, I can buy a few with how much the BMW one is. (if you can find them)
 
Agreed, if a used one is a fraction of the price, then it is worth taking the risk IMO. Try and get a second hand one from as new a car as possible.
 
I am sorry to say but I had a similar issue a few months ago and I discussed the case of replacing the unit with a used one but my mechanic said whenever they changed that part with a used one in other BMWs the problem reappeared after a few months, the reason being the oil in the system that gets stuck with time. The only way to get a used one that might last will be to purchase one immediately after it gets off a vehicle, otherwise the oil will stick and you will have problems again. My mechanic suggested that the best choice is actually to recondition mine but luckily the problem disappeared while I was looking to ship mine to the UK for reconditioning and never came back (for unknown reasons).

I saw your posts in other threads and I assume the reconditioning did not work for you right?

I would suggest take your time as the car is drivable and look for the best possible solution and leave the new one at the end, i.e look for a good condition unit that has just been removed from a vehicle first and see how it goes. Also be aware that not all the units match with all the Zeds so check the part numbers before purchasing. I wish your problem goes away as mine did before spending your cash, you never know with electronics :thumbsup:
 
+1 on checking the numbers, they all look the same but are not

i think that if it is the pump that is broken - reconditioning can help, if it is the controller - and mine appears to be the controller, reconditioning dosent seem to be an option
