Second car for under £3k

Few changes in my circs and also wanting to do less miles on the MC has led to me looking at getting a second car. Under £3k, still nippy and has to be reliable. Also needs to be a large hatch or estate. Basically a bit of a work horse that's still fun etc. Having had one of these as my previous car:

What do you think? (Please, save the 'Skoda' jokes!)

Any other thoughts/recommendations?

An absolute bloody bargain... is that what these things are going for?

I know, cheap eh?! I sold my previous one to my father in law and he's loving it! 35mpg, 0-60 in under 7secs, boot the size of the Tardis, basically a Golf GTI but bigger. Hhmmmmmm...

Wouldn't slag them off on the badge alone as i know they are VW but they are dull visually in & out . whatever budget i have to like the look or i fall out with them very quickly :|

A little over budget but I'm sure you could negotiate.

Maxsam

MrWilks, good options there, don't know anything about Saabs though...are they good? Parts, servicing, reliability etc?? The Skoda is tempting what with the very strong and proven 1.8T engine used many times successfully. Miles on this are good and looks pretty pristine, just a shame it's so far away!

But I have this for looking good!

Doesn't have to be visually appealing, just pokey and reliable...I mean the Saab's no looker either (IMO) but I'm sure very capable for its purpose...

Andi.

Good shout Andi but should say I'd prefer a manual and something not as thirsty as a V6! Think a Jag might be too expensive on parts/servicing and want to buy something defo under £3k with as few miles as possible on...

Thanks bluestreak, I've had a look but I think that thread focuses a bit too much on smaller cars compared to what I want. Large hatch or estate required by myself, don't mind it being a little older. Would just love something that's been cared for like we care for our Z's on here!

Great jokes Maxsam  my first car was a skoda :) the legendary super estelle 120L it was my rear engined rear drive 911! I thought I had heard all of the jokes but some new ones in there!

My mate had a VRS & he loved his, I wouldn't go anywhere near them now I had too much stick 23 years ago I couldn't put myself through it again

I don't think you will go too far wrong with the VRS Woody :) hell of alot of performance for the cash, I have run a couple of V6 mondeos as cheap second cars they have been dependable in my experience. :driving:

Thats a great work horse with a touch of pace for 3k :)

I think when dreamer junior comes along i might consider something like this to try keep hold of the M. In reality though, i'll end up with two of these and no M :(
