Seats on a E89

Hi Everyone!

I'm pretty new here, so you might have a noob question coming your way.

I've been looking around for a 2015-2016 28i for a while now. But I can't seem to figure what kinds of seats there are around for this model. I'd prefer to have sport seats, but electric adjustment, memory function and lumbar support are even more important to me.

As far as I see:
- standard seats (with optionally electric adjustment+memory and/or lumbar support)
- sport seats

I never see any ads with sport seats AND electric adjustment/memory/lumbar. Do sport seats always come with those features and dealers are just too lazy too add those to the ads? Or do sport seats just never come with those features?

And lastly, are the sport seats in the Msport pack different from the regular sport seats?

I'm located in Belgium and the most interesting finds are scattered around Germany, so it's not feasible to go check 'm all out.

Do you know any details to look for, to distinguish which is which? From the sometimes sparse amount of pictures in ads, you mostly have a pretty good general view of the seats and dashboard. But not between the seats of course, maybe some other details can give away the mentioned features...

M Sport seats and sport seats are exactly the same thing. They are officially called Sport Seats by BMW, only difference being the cars with M Sport pack got them as standard and cars without the M Sport pack had to have them optioned at production. It was possible to option electric memory with either type of seats but not sure if you could get lumbar with the sport seats. Lumbar support is very rare, hardly anyone ticked that option box.

In terms of what to looks for or differences between the two, the sport seats have thicker bolster on the back and the base and it has the extending thigh support, the normal seats are much flatter.

Lumbar support was available as an option on the standard non sport seats (think it will be rare), back in July 2012 it was an optional extra at £245 on all SDrives (both driver & passenger seats)

On the E89 I am pretty sure in the BMW brochure it says what you refer to as M Sport seats as just sport seats, also when I decode my VIN (mine is a standard car), I have the option named sport seats, which are exactly the same seats like the ones you have Smartbear and your car has the M Sport package. The standard E89 has just standard seats (they dont have a name) but I now many when they are advertising the car wrongly word them as sport seats when actually they aren't, they are just standard seats. Perhaps they think it's a sports car so the seats as standard should be a sport seat? LOL :lol:

You’re right, bmw seem to have had a rethink on the seat description front after the e85 models :?

From that sheet, it looks like lumbar support could be optioned with either standard or sports seats but to find a car with lumbar is very rare. Only one my BMWs I have had in the past came with that option, very nice it was too!

Me too. The Japanese almost never spec a lot of the 'extras' in the Euro cars. I believe it's because they don't hang onto them for long, so see the extra money for things like m-sport seats as a bad investment. And since 95% of our cars are Jap imports, we end up with their preferences. The good thing is that we have a lot of JDM performance goodies (like Nissan GTRs, WRX STI's etc) imported as well :lol:

Just to confuse things there is also bolster adjustment as well. Lumbar is the adjustment behind your back whereas bolster are the sides..

The way you can tell is that if you have the single horizontal rocker switch its just bolster adjustment whereas if you have the circular 4 way adjuster you get both. Never seen that one in the flesh though..

I have sports seats with full electric pack, including lumbar.
I used it once when I first got in the car, if I remember correctly there is a small round 'disc' type button down on the front edge of the seat next to the 'comfort fit air bag' (or whatever they call them) switch

(M) Sports seats are quite hard and can be a bit tight, both under the bum and behind the back. I have a body mass index of 25, so officially am not a fat bas/ard - well, not fat anyway - but it took a long time to get the seat right, because the bolsters, both bum and the adjustable back, take up a lot of the seat.

I often have to readjust the seat, because the cleaners use brushes on the controls and disturb the settings. Quite literally, a pain in the a/se.

These things said, the adjustable under-knee support is excellent and I wouldn't want to do without it.
