Seat re-dye Furniture Clinic

I know there are some seat gurus in here so thought I would check what the best applicator and method is to re-paint the bolster of my seat.

I have the Furniture Clinic dye and have completely cleaned the seat now.

Questions:

- Apply multiple layers I assume with how much dry time in between
- What is the best applicator (sponge or micro fibre)
- How much rubbing in of the paint or just a light brush of paint over the bolster
- Finish with the usual leather protection products?

Thanks chaps / chappesses

Am sure more experienced people will come along on this soon, but when I’ve used it I’ve done the following…

1. Clean leather
2. Apply a few lights coats with a sponge. I recently used a microfibre too though, and while it seemed to work fine, you had less control with the amount you apply.
3. Dry with hairdryer between coats.
4. Protect with leather cleaner/balm etc.

Just the bolster, that is the only part that looks a bit naff. The back is black by the way, the bolsters red

What sort of sponge did you use inks?

The small split in the leather may stick back together with some furniture clinic glue sb.

If you don't want to do that and just want to paint then clean the leather best you can with a leather cleaner. Use a sponge sanding block, if new wear it down a little on a piece of wood, and sand all the leather you want to paint but avoid all stitching. The block being square edged will help you get close. Sand a little more where the creases are.
Dust down with a paint brush, hoover, and then clean with isopropyl alcohol (order from amazon.) Don't get the alcohol on anything that won't be painted and don't leave the rag you used on anything you don't want ruined.
Dabbing (or blotting) with a sponge will put on more paint but you can put on multiple paint layers in a short time. Stroking with a sponge will put on less paint but you can do a thorough slow job on first coat to get right in the edges followed by a quick second coat and then have to wait 12hrs before putting on another coat. The reason for the 12hr wait is that you can moisten the first coat and then it drags and you get a brush stroke effect on the paint.
Dry with a hair dryer between coats. If dabbing leave 5 minutes before using a hair dryer to let some of the bubbles dissipate.
The paint cures enough to sit on in 24hrs. The paint fully cures in 7 days. Don't put anything like water, cleaner or balm/cream on the seat for at least 7 days.

Buy a new car washing sponge and cut it up with a pair of scissors into the size you want.

If more than 30 minutes has passed since last used then use a new piece of sponge. Or you'll get lumps of half dried paint on the leather.

My furniture clinic stuff came with a little round sponge and a weird round chamois-type thing (presumably for buffing).

Just remember it is old cracked skin, so treat it with care.
Half a kg of moisturiser will help, but may make it a bit 'slippy'.

I just decanted the dye into a glass dish and used two paintbrushes on mine, broad for most of it and fine for the edges. I found the dye went on quite blue but dried much darker so needed multiple coats (at least 4 on here), but it’s quick do do and any overspill can easily be wiped off. Probably 2-3 hours work on mine including door cards.

It’s well worth repairing that split, you can get a near perfect result with the FC leather repair kit, particularly if you are painting afterwards. Again, quick and easy to do, the FC products are really good.

Thanks for that detail, off to Amazon for the missing bits and checking the glue sb from FC

^ this, PVR. But I also used a small, round normal sponge and it was fine too.

With a pair of tweezers do you think you could get a piece of material behind that split?

I need to check tomorrow. Until I looked at the picture I hadn’t actually seen the split. Where would I get a bit to slide in from? The Mulberry bags seem a bit thick for that 8)

I’d follow what Usel says based on his previous!
