seat problems

ok so this isnt the usual question about seats.

i have the standard SE seats. not the sport seats.

so the problem is the seat bolsters at the edge of the seats, her indoors hurt her leg years ago and the way the bolster holds her leg means it hurts her to sit in the car, we have tried everything to do with adjusting the seat but its simply the edge of the seat angled up. it happens in all chairs that are this shape.

so i was thing of some sort of cushion or something to lift her up abit. in her car (old pug 106) the seats are much softer but much flat and she is ok.

any ideas?

It may take some experimenting to find what works. I would start by getting a piece of medium density foam about 2 inches thick and carve the underside to fit in the seat and leaving the top flat. This way the pressure from the bolster does not transmit through the foam. Once you find a working configuration, a fabric cover could be made up without too much effort.

What about some form of foot rest in the footwell to lift her legs so that the pressure is taken off? Failing that, I think someone on here did a 'seat spacer mod' which involves adding spacers under the seat rails where the seat bolts to the floor. If you added spacers to the rear bolts of the seat, you may be able to lift the back of the seat a few inches higher which may help also?

Andrew.

that's kind of what i was thinking some sort of foam. just not sure what to get.

its not so much the height of the seat. she has it jacked up to the highest point already and its no help. its the bolster on the seat base that pushes her leg up a bit. it happens everywhere as its nerve damage in the upper leg/hip. just a twist in the wrong direction and she cant walk for a few days.

i can see this is going to be a real pain for me as i like huggy seats and most cars i am likely to get will have these sort of seats these SE ones are a bit s**t on that front already. as she doesnt care about cars she just goes for old shitty ones (MAX spend is 500... i kid you not) so the seats are always mediocre at best . thank god i have these not the sport seats really.

This is a great idea, and good excuse to upgrade to sport seats as the increased bolster size will hold the custom cushion in place far better. When you make the foam cover, make it out of alcantara or something similar as it will grip the leather a little too and help avoid it sliding around so much. And don't forget the cushion can be swapped over to passenger side when you take your Mrs out!

The cushion idea is a good one as it's easily removed and experimented with until just right.

Don't upgrade to sports as the bolster is savave compared to the near flat standard seats. Much narrowere and designed to hold thighs.

sports seats would make the problem a whole lot worse but the alacantra idea is just what i was thinking ...

You could even glue something like carpet runner underlayment (or similar grippy material) to the bottom, and with a nice alcantara cover on top. You'd end up with a nice comfortable cushion that stays in place and keeps her in place. Don't forget you can also experiment with different densities in one cushion, say firm in the centre and soft on the sides. Or possibly in different layers. The possibilities are endless, be creative!
