Seat error codes

Hi all,

I have recently swapped out my seats on my 2004 Z4 e85 from leather standard seats which are heated and fully electric to heated manual sport seats.

I have two error messages and a airbag warning light on the cluster.
9862 - appears to be related to the seat belt tensioner (both seats)
9895 - which is linked to the occupants sensor.

I have double checked the connections and used contact clearer but I am still unable to clear the error codes using a C110. Does anyone have any suggestions what I should do next? I have done a little reading but left a little confused where to go now.

It’s possible you may solve one issue, the occupancy one, with an eBay bypass unit

The other issue is related that it thinks the passenger seat buckle is not recognised- most purchases of the above sensor also come with a bypass to remedy that issue too?

If you have the vin for the donor car it will ensure you get the right modules

I think that will sort your issues but seek further views on here- they will say if I am right or wrong

The generic modules look like this:

Thanks for the bypass unit. I assume the airbag should work as normal on the passenger side.

The seat belt tensioners are from another car (long story). So they appear correct and when checking they are interchangeable with many other BMW's

Yeah airbag will deploy regardless of whether someone is in the seat or not

This will be my option B.

The belt tensioners are from 2007 car but should be the same.

When looking at Realoem the belt tensioner doesn't have a flylead but my part does, is this right? Also there is safety connection which nothing is mated too. Again looking at Realoem I can't see a harness connection here (red arrow). Is anyone able to confirm this is correct and alternatively suggest a way to check the tensioner?

Should I have this connector assembly for a E85? I didn't get it with the seats I bought

I’ve seen this before - or similar

Check if the seat has a cable running from the buckle (not just the pre-tensioner) Between 2004 & 2005 the seats changed to know if the belt is plugged into the buckle or not, so there is an extra circuit being monitored. Your replacement seats may be missing this and the car is looking for it.

Hi
After some digging I need this extra airbag harness which was missing from my seat I brought.
I should get the part tomorrow to trail.

I have the cable that records if the buckle is inserted. I discovered it records it as error until the seat belt buckle is secured - thanks Number5

This is turning into a one way conversation/blog :D

So I may also need a seat belt emulator has previous mentioned. I was wondering does anyone know the connector part number for the pre-tensioner as highlighted on the image attached. I am aware I could just cut the current one off the the current pretensioner and soldier together but I rather do it properly if possible.

I’ve tried to find connector parts on the loom previously- albeit for heated seats, to no avail

If you do find them (assume realoem doesn’t show them) I think you’ll have to cut

No need to cut! The terminals are really easy to remove just using a fine electrical tweezers.

If you push on the small arrow head form on the terminals themselves in you can slide them up. It is done in two stages.

Update: So I have installed the occupancy sensor and buckle emulators and secure the pretensioner harness, see image attached. You can see I attached the modules on the same bracket as main connector (pretensioner harness connection). I did need to do a cut and shut job the emulator kit bought. I did dry test before assembly everything together and it worked.

I have erased all the error codes for left hand side module but I still have a airbag light on. Is it because I am yet to install the pretensioner harness on the driver's side? I hope it is.

This is excellent work and good of you to record it all for future reference.
Hope you get it all sorted ok with the airbag light.
Thanks for sharing your experience with this so far.

Update:
I have finally finished installing the driver's side harness etc.

I am using a C110 to clear the fault codes for the airbag within the B pillar module sub-menu, which initially appears to work as the airbag warning light goes off. I check the error codes and they are all gone, but a few seconds later it comes back on again (the error code and airbag light). Any idea why or has anyone seen this before?
The driver seat is now error clear.

I have found out that the seats are from a face-lifted seats in pre face-fitted car. The electrical architecture between the two seats is what is causing the issue.

I had to buy a pre-facelift seat controller (face lifted cars had this integrated into the occupancy sensor) - 776-927-500 - Secondhand approx. £22.50
New link harness (connects between controller and main seat harness) - 6927572 - Secondhand approx. £18.00
Bypass unit (which connects into the seat controller) - Approx. £12.50

I bought all my parts from Ebay.

So now my airbag is always on unless I deactivate the airbag with the key, but there is no error message and the airbag light is off. I am going to see how much a local indy will charge me to replace the occupancy sensor. The sensor is around £130 I believe and the seat has need to be heavily dismantled , so I guess it won't be cheap. This is what I am looking into next.
