But it won't sound nowhere near as good or have the silky smoothness of the 6. Horses for courses! Also I doubt the average person will really notice a huge difference in handling after all these are GT cars and not track weapons.

Well to keep the antagonism going..the N20 was supplied with an electronic Active Sound Design feed to the cabin speakers that makes it sound like a 6 potter..and with dual balance shafts i doubt anyone in a blind test could determine whether the N20 was rougher than the 6 potter.. :poke:

If you are feeling that desperate you can always stick a 30i on the wing ..

As an aside I cannot determine what type of engine I’ve got in my Z4..it’s just smoooooothhhh n powerful ..now I have switch off the ASD it’s nice n quiet now and far less fatiguing..should have bought a Roller instead

I have tried both the 18i and 28i, I can't speak for others but the difference is big. It isn't a bad sounding unit for a 4 pot but face it you just can't get close to what an inline 6 can do. On another note when you open the bonnet on the 4 pots it looks like something is missing, it just doesn't look right with all the empty space around that engine. :poke:

It’s not a V8 then 6, 4, 2 doesn’t really bother me...but I agree about the engine bay...

It’s a bit like opening up a modern PC and finding a circuit board with just a few chips...not rammed with chips like they used to be...

But the modern PC is a lot faster..

Hi Pbondar,

Your yellow 20i looks great. 33 cars, 22 motorbikes...you must have seen it all. BMW number plate...
This friendly rivalry between 6 cyl. and 4 cyl. turbo is a hot topic. Z4's, Porsche etc.
I am currently looking for a Z4 28i or a safely remapped 20i auto. FSH, Alpine White or Mineral Grey Metallic, Black Kansas leather, £15,000 to £17,000. 19" wheels, change the run-flat tyres to normal tyres. Not sure what brand is best yet. What are the essential, must-have options or packs, please? Anything else I need to know or do?
Thanks.

Geoff

M-Sport seats (heated/memory/electric all good) - the one thing I miss in my Z4 :(

Hi Geoff, I may be misreading your post; do you mean you are looking for a 20i already mapped?
That may restrict your search. Celtic tuning, for example, will come to your door and remap the car to around 280bhp for about £300. So easy enough to get done after the purchase. Which will also give you an opportunity to compare before and after.
Don't forget, if that is your aim, then you could include the 18i in your search as it is the same engine.

Hi there, as you can see ownership is a personal thing and love is blind!

With 20/20 hindsight I would go for:

Musts
MSport variant
8 speed auto
Parking Sensors
Cruise Control
Heated Seats
IDrive with NAV and DAB
11 speaker 676 amp version
Extended USB/Bluetooth interface

Wind deflector nice but can be fitted afterwards
Comfort package nice to have
Extended lighting nice to have

Wheels you can change easily so wouldn’t be over focused on that...

As stated most 20i or 28i will be good...a remap takes either to around 280BHP safely which marries well with the auto box..

Some 18i are underspeced so be careful there..

I think my heart and soul would like a 3 litre growling monster, with respect, but my head says 28i or 20i with a boost of some kind.

I’ll antagonize the 6 potters by pointing out that, a re-mapped 4 pot will out run a 30i 6 potter by some way and in the vast majority of people who have driven both is a much better handling car... :poke:
I read this a lot from 1 poster :poke:
I just came back from 120 km of twisty back roads this AM. My ill fitted 3L push the car around quicker than it needs to go. It sounds lovely with exhaust upgrade and corners like a scared rabbit on rails. (pilot 4s).
It has a really wide power band. You can get after it or let it lope along however the mood suits you. More than enough car for me, but hey, everybody says it's less than perfect. I'm chuffed. And honestly if you want a perfect roadster you look at a different German car. :P

There's a 28i MSport auto in black for less than your budget on Autotrader at the moment, but it's a 12 plate if that makes a difference.

The 28is are thin on the ground I agree. I couldn't find one in the spec I wanted and thought it easier and cheaper to get the spec right first and then have the engine mapped to match the output of the 28i.

Haven't tried the standard seats but the MSport heated ones are fantastic
