Seat Advice

So after a month of ownership, I've come to the conclusion that I let my heart rule my head, and that I don't really fit 100% in the Z!

With this in mind, and to save my poor forehead from further abuse, I visited my local friendly fabricator, who said he'd be able to free up 2-3" of extra headroom, but would necessitate ripping out the motors, etc, and that it wouldn't be particularly reversible...

With that in mind, I started furiously searching the forums here, but haven't found all the answers I need:

1. Can the bottom seat cushions be transferred to other bases?

2. Can I switch from electric to manual?

3. Do the sport and standard seats share the same mounts, bases (under the cushion), and runners?

4. If yes to the above, anyone know of any cars being broken, where I could buy the standard manual drivers seat for me to modify?

Cheers all!

Have you seen Luke Mace's thread? He's fitted after market seats on self made mounts. That might be a route forward for you then you can sell them and put the car back to standard if and when you decide to sell it.

Not particularly reversible? That's rubbish.

Seats can be taken off of their running gear very easily. I've done electric to manual and vice versa about 4 times now.

All you need this chap to do, is take the 'Gubbbins' off the bottom of the seat, get you a 'standard' back and forth runner or similar, and create fixing holes to go in the standard locations (four bolts).

You probably would lose the recliner adjustment too, to go really low, but it should be stupidly easy for a seat guy.

Then, to revert this, you'd just unbolt it, re fix the standard 'gubbins' and fit them back.

I Sympathise with you. I'm only 5' 11" [ish], but with long legs, so even with manual seats, and the wheel as high as it will go, I'm finding it a bit of a squeeze - especially now I've refitted the carpets :)

My main problem is catching my clutch heel on the floor, but I do a lot of Pit/Startline marshalling, so invested some time ago in a pair of co-driver 'nomex' boots - like racing boots, but with a bit of a heel - and these work fine - but look a bit 'posey', what with OMP emblazoned all down their sides :o

I think I'll try bare [well sock covered] feet, or shoes with a very thin sole [i.e. slippers]

Hope that helps

For reversibility he's suggested exactly what you stated, hence my list of questions.

His comment regarding a lack of reversibility was if he started to hack about with the rails I have now.

If you know of an easier solution, I'm all ears!

Sports and standard, electric and manual are completely interchangeable with but a few torx bolts. Dne it many times.

I'll have a look at mine on Tuesday and see if there is a way of removing the entire subframe from the seat. If yes, it would be an easier solution than having to remove motors etc and could get a new fabricated shorter subframe made and could be reversible come sale time.

Do you ever move your seat forward or backward or does anyone else drive your car?

That would be very kind of you. Thank you!

There would be no need to move the seat once adjusted for me.

I have a pair of standard manual seats you can have for £75 pm me if you're interested. Would really only want to do collection only.

im intrigued by this, her indoors really really cant go in my car. after 15 mins the other day she was in so much pain she cried. i only have the SE electric seats. i wonder if i could get someone to make me a new base with a butchered cushion in it so the cushion was flat.

I'm 6"2 and find my eyeline is flush with the top of the screen (I have the slightly higher sports seats in my Z)

At 6"6 I honestly cant see you improving the seating position with the OEM seatsunless you fit track seats, but then you have a less comfortable ride

that may depend on the seats fitted. the shell bucket seats i had in the westy were much much better than the standard seats i have in that car now ... might be a tad difficult to get in and out of tho in the z. andrew what seats are you in at the mo SE or the sports?

Electric sports seats.

The idea is to modify a manual base from a donor seat, and drop my ass to the floor!
