Sealey Brake Caliper Wind Back Tool

I have just got this wind back tool to do the front pads.

I know this is a stupid question but how do you fit the pressure plate over the wind back tool? At one end is the adapter plate where the various sizes of adapters fit over the magnetic lugs to rest against the piston. But I cannot see how the pressure plate slides over the tool to allow it to push against the opposite side of the brake calliper?

The answer must be staring at me but I cannot see it, any clues appreciated.

These tools are often used on rear brake calipers with an intergrate handbrake, those callipers need the pistons wound in to retract them as opposed to just squishing them back with a small G clamp and a piece of wood.

The fronts should just push back when clamped firmly... make sure you remove the lid from the brake fluid reservoir first and check there is enough air gap to take the fluid being returned.

Dario, the tool set I have is the Sealey 18 pc wind back kit. I am having trouble inserting an image but they are on e-bay. The main difference from your picture above is that the pressure plate above has a segment cut out allowing it to be dropped over the shaft of the tool. With mine the pressure plate has a hole drilled in the centre of the plate so it has to slide up from one end of the wind back tool.

The problem is that like your picture above the T -handle is at one end of the tool and the piston adapter is at the other and so there is no way to slide the pressure plate on? Does the adapter end come off?

Just use a G Clamp as Adam suggest or a bar and some pressure.

Is it safe to wind back calipers that just need to be pushed back?
 
The caliper tool is the correct tool for the job!

The G-clamp will do the trick but if you don't push the piston back squarely you could damage it have to cough up for a new one!

Forgot to say, that pistons on some calipers have to be rotated as they are pushed, normally the rears I believe, honestly don't know if that applies to BMWs.
 
The Z4 (all models to the best of my knowledge) do not have have calipers that require the piston's to be rotated. I know for sure the 2003 3.0 models do not.
 
You're going so far off track - Zedrider just wants to know how to assemble the tool, not about G clamps, revolving calipers, etc.

I've taken a look at the 18 piece kit and the photo is not clear enough, but I would say 1 of 2 things happens. either you remove the T bar and it slots over the top or you unwind everything off the end of the tool, slot on the cross plate then put it back together with the correct sized end on to fit the piston.

Shame it's not slotted as per the one Dario posted as that would be quicker...

Ok Zedrider, i'm going to take a stab in the dark here.

i have had a look an ebay at the tool kit and think its like this.

Thanks to everybody who replied. The problem is sovled! Even though it doesn't look like it, the pressure plate will fit over the T- handle shown in Darios' picture. It then slides down the threaded shaft to sit against the collar, as the tool is wound apart to compress the caliper.

Guess what I'm doing on days off!
