These prices are Singapore Dollars - about 2 to the pound at the moment. I had no idea how high their car tax was :o

Thats the thing i dont understand... the tax is ridiculous over there.. yet 1 in 10 cars is a fancy motor... however drive over the boarder to Malaysia and most of the cars are Protons!

Same in India
My cousins has just gone back yesterday and one of them cought a new shape Octavia - for 27k GBP!!!
3 series (320d SE) is around £50k - CRAZY!!!

Thailand is the land of opportunity. A 1995 3 series sells for around 12k GBP over there - yet here would go for a song!

Rich people and expats working for big corporates. Just like Central London, which makes you think you are the only one without a DBS or an SLR... ;)

You also need a Certificate of Entitlement (COE) to own and operate a car in Singapore, which is why the roads are so clear. They are issued in small batches and last 10 years for a given vehicle; people bid up to $30,000- $40,000 for one. It's designed to keep car population growth at 3% a year, apparently. You can also make only one bid, so it's like a sealed bid auction. Then there is 41% import tax and 150% registration fee. And road tolls, and road tax like us.....

Norway isn't great either; a BMW 335d is about £85,000. So although we get RAPED compared to what Americans pay, thing's aren't that bad.
