sdrive28i and the internet

well, after dithering for a couple of weeks yesterday i finally traded in my sdrive23i for a 28i ex demonstrator. i take delivery on thursday. msport, alpine white with coral red leather!

the 28i has just about every extra i can think of including internet. it's not something i would have chosen quite honestly but i am starting to get curious about what to expect. the salesman admitted he didn't know much about it but will find out in time for the hand-over. i've googled it of course but can't find a lot of detail.

anyone know about this or any useful links to info?

Look up BMW connected drive.
It allows you to
1 Weather updates to the Nav map
2 Google street view of your destination
3 Lock/unlock and locate your car remotely
4 basic web browser
Stuff like that

Google search links to your navigation, and you an send routes to your idrive remotely too...

It's good for passing time waiting in the car but it's not super quick!!

thanks!

not sure if i was clear, i'm really curious about how the car connects to the internet. do i have to get linked to an ISP (internet service provider) as i would do in a domestic set up, and how is the service paid for, ie monthly subscriptions or what? is the connection through a 3G/4G mobile dongle, wireless hotspot, or what?

this service is (apparently) full unrestricted internet access. i'm sure all will become clear on thursday (or not). the bmw website is very vague about the whole thing and lots of conflicting info is around on the various chat forums.

It car has it's own mobile sim that includes free subscription for 3 years.

thanks, i did see this somewhere, but similarly i read that bmw were charging 20 euros a month for the service. now i aint being mean, i'm sure that to some people this is well worth it, but i'm not sure i would use it that much given that i have an ipad for mobile internet access anyway.

The Google and BMW Connected iPhone app to send an address directly to your car is really useful. I've been using this quite a bit recently in advance rather than putting the postcode into the SatNav. I've found the other services, such as the weather updates quite slow.

As an AUC and one of the first E89s, we've only officially got a few days left of the initial three year service, so we'll see what happens on the 1st Sept? This service is unfortunately not included as part of the AUC package, once the initial three years have expired.

Congratulations on the car by the way, nice colour combination.

Yep, car has its own inbuilt sim (telematics) and it doesn't rely on you having a mobile phone. It is how the car can connect you to the BMW call centre if you need info, or are in a crash.

The service is free for 3 years from the cars registration. After that it is about £150 a year (need to check those figures).

It doesn't use 3G, so for internet it is slow...

The connected drive features are useful and nice to have. Does it defo have internet? That is an extra option.

thanks for that. it all seems reasonably clear now. it's a pity that BMW don't explain it anywhere, or not where i can find!

yes the car definitely has the internet extra option so i look forward to trying it out.

The BMW site is pretty poor on explaining features. When using the new car builder thingy, the descriptions of some of the options are practically none existant! They are trying to sell a product...how hard can it be!

And to rely on the salesman can be a risky thing, cos if the salesman gets it wrong, you often have no comeback.

Having the car with connected drive is a nice feature, so have a play and see what you think.

They set if all up at handover, I should get a text from BMW in a couple of days confirming that all is set up.

The deal is that it's free of 3 years then £10 a month.

tried internet today, works OK. click on 'internet' in idrive and i get launched into google (providing the car is not moving).

BUT it is painfully slow. my modest 2MB/s broadband in the house is many times faster.
