sDrive 20i Msport

Regardless of the engine, one thing I have learnt, is not to buy new or nearly new. 14 months on, my car is worth £15k less than what I paid for it, and in March when it's 2 years old, it will be exactly half what it cost new.....and that's after 2 years....

Much more linear in the way it delivers the power. I've started to wind mine up a bit more now and there is no obvious point where you can feel it 'come on turbo'. It's more like the Porsche really, nothing much going on below 1500rpm but very progressive after that up to about 5500(max so far). With the Porsche it came on 'cam' at 5000 and that was where the real fun started

In fact it's more like by old rover v8 than anything(tuned to 200bhp at the wheels in a 1972 MGB roadster that handled like a barge). Similar power, similar delivery less torque

Snap, but it depends how you view a purchase. If like me you 'purchased' the car, then losses feel acute. If you get it on PCP or lease, then you accept a new perspective that cars cost in any event, and its likely cheaper to pay for it over time and than try to 'purchase' or 'own' one. I'm coming round to the idea of PCP and lease, as I never truly own a car long enough for it to be worth owning outright and absorbing the horrendous losses.

I've done all my figures for what I paid in my 35i second hand the new 20i brand new would be a cheaper option to own over 3/4 years, I didn't believe it, but these cars depreciate so fast, its easier to take it on guaranteed PCP/lease values and just keep paying and swapping. It's still a 20i of course and a far as I'm concerned it's the engine in my 35i that makes the car special for me. If I swapped to a 20i I'd be concerned its just a bit normal.

Besides, I have an eye on that ESS upgrade ;)

Yes the depreciation is scary at £1,000 a month or thereabouts.
How can such a premium product lose so much value a month ?.
Anyway will be keeping my 23is M Sport for a long time methinks unless I win the lotto as I love the whole package & the fact that it's 2 cars in one.
Bought mine brand new to my specification & I also would normally have changed it for something else by now (18 months in) ,not always better just different, but it's the first car I've ever owned that I've not got bored with yet & thats coming from a remapped 997 carrera 3.6.

1000 per month and some for some not me

My ideal is a sub 18 month old newer the better. best trinkets lowest milage but its the lowest price youngest is the key and sub £23K.

when I got my 08 it cost me 6K to change from the 06. same model but the 08 had 8K milage the 06 42K. I save £280 per month so 28 months had over 7.5K saved. both are £32K new

This time a little later than I wanted got a 3.0 with 9k miles 18 months old cost to trade in was 8K so 32 months I had 8.5K so up again. now have a £37K car.

If I lost 1K a month in 2 years time I would be paying someone 2K to take it off me which is highly unlikely and is similar now as the old model.

Now the 2.0. debate. I had always picked the 2.5 as the best price to performance stab, MPG, insurance was similar to a 2 or 2.2 but much better than a 3.0. the 2.5 was more than 1 second faster but less than 0.6 from the 3.0. I could never quite justify the extra £3K and over the 2 years would be £2K (do the maths).

I think the price drop was due to a massive discount on the 3.0 and 2.3 for the launch of the 2 new 4 pots. The Msport is also dropping hard like the old model (last 2 of mine were msport) so again trinkets become worthless on trade in only easier to sell.

Now Im in a 3.0 I am amaized at the difference. Yes 99% of the time you can only go as fast as the fiat 500 in front but wow the grunt of the 6 pot and acceleration when overtaking is amaizing and effortless.

Sub 7 seconds is ok but for me my next one will be the 2.8, and hope I will get a bit better than 31mpg which is similar to my old 2.5.

In 6 months time my new 12 plate 2.8 will be regestered for 36K and a further 12 months time someone will be trading it in having less then 10K miles. By then I will have the cash to trade mine in all for less than £280 per month.
