Sdrive 20i mpg

This will sound a bit nerdy but I have been tracking the mpg of my cars for a while now.

The odd thing is that since the new zed arrived its mpg has been going down. Plots a nice downward trend, with the occassional long drive spiking up the mpg. I can understand some drop as I got used to the car, but I never noticed this on the e85.

Just wondering if anyone else has an 20i and what kind of fuel efficiency they get.

I havent got mine yet however I would be interested to see what kind of MPG you are getting...

I would have thought its going to take time to get a real average. Perhaps you didn't reset it as often on the e85 as you have the e89? Mine takes a good few days to get fairly stable figures, and even then, a day of pottering around or a day of long trips can throw it all out again. I think you'd need to be running it several weeks to get a proper average figure perhaps?

You'll laugh at how sad this sounds.

I have data recording fuel grade, garage, average mph, average mpg, miles driven, fuel used (Its a complete fill each time, therefore what I fill up is what has been used.) Then I calculate the mpg of the tank.

I did miss a couple of data points but I have 15 recorded values for the new car. Last recorded value was 29.85, car average read at 32.1.

Best I saw was 34.48 which was the very first drive.

The average mpg estimated on the computer seems always to overestimate.

Hmmm. Worth another look. I checked them the other side of Christmas.
Personally I am suspicious of a low rev ticking I can hear. It dissappears as the revs increase, but its there.

Have you been using your airconditioning or heated seats?

Your difference is around 10% which would account for that MPG loss

Dont have heated seats, aircon doesnt really get used at this time of year, and if its sunny the roof is down :)

Maybe its all the speakers... :D

As we all know, how you drive and where you drive plays a massive part in figures. At 32+mpg that's what BMW quote for urban use on the 20i. The 40mpg is likely for mostly motorway + some urban, and if you can ever get the 50, thats you driving like a granny at 60mph on the motorway all the time. I get around 25mpg mostly urban, and 38 on a motorway at perhaps slightly higher than normal speeds (who, me, fast, never).

As for the ticking, its normal, its the direct injection system. Mine does it a bit, but I drove a 20i and thats much louder, its a bit on the diesel like sound at idle, but goes quiet when revving. Same for a 328i I took out, good performance, but noisy at idle.

My dog chases squirrels and has caught a few...maybe I should take them prisoner and harvest there tears, then I could make my own fuel!

Thanks for explaining the ticking, I noticed it and then kept on noticing it. The stealers of course had no explanation for the sound.

I estimate my travel to be about 70% motorway 30% urban.

Mine is around 35mpg at the moment, mix of A roads and dual carridgways. As the weather improves I expect this to drop as I get the roof down more and turn all frisky!

Im loving this, sorry. So a 2.0l 4 pot is worse than a 2.5 v6.

My last 3 whatever I did was around 32 to 34. My current one is hitting around 30mpg. All 4 zds doing the same trips. I find the sports button and manual on my 3.0 auto better at mpg than normal, I think its due to faster gear changes and I change at lower reves and move up more than 1 gear at a time.

Try sports

If you're talking about a 2.5 Z4, its a straight 6 not a V6. Again, its all about how you drive it, and the mapping of the throttle in normal mode is to suit most people, but can't of course suit all, some people may find that sport mode can deliver savings due to the way they drive.

dohh me v6 yes straight 6 (still thinking im in a tt like 8 years ago). Around town its around 28 so will have a bash non sports to see if it improves.

My zd went for 1st service and my mpg had dropped, possibly as the may have reset the mapping. on the dash it was 32 and was getting back 29. This week my dash is saying 36 so will be looking back at the 31mpg. No difference in driving or roads.

I wondered if Sport mode might slightly improve mpg, since less electrical assistance is applied to the steering....?
