Screen flip error after MMI box install

Hi all
A few weeks ago, i installed my Mr 12Volt mmi box and it has been fabulous, the sound is great and use of waze has saved me some nasty bills... :driving:

Over the last week i have started to see a problem with the closing of my flip screen after ignition turn off. Unsure if this is mmi install related.

When i keep the start button pressed to turn off the car and eject the key fob, my screen does not close and the information on the screen drops out of android auto and back to the CIC menu but stays open and powered on...

After reinserting the key fob and removing again, the screen will close and all is good. Does not happen every time, so is a little difficult to troubleshoot. I can happily live with this as the benefit outweighs the hassle.....

Any ideas...Eric

I have seen this on mine (kindof).

I say kindof, as it was doing it before I installed the MMI box, and when i scan the car & check history, it seems like 1 in 50 times it reports a failure of the closing of the screen (every 2 or 3 months). The car does record these events & stores them, so you can check this with the right tool.

It hasn't got better (or worse) in the 18 months I have had the car, and for the above reason I don't think it was influenced by the MMI.

Question#1 - can you check the history of codes on your scanner?
Question#2 - did you have the car for a decent while prior to installing the MMI box?

The Open/Close of the screen is controlled via the CanBus system. It receives a signal to do this, but the CanBus wires run all around the car to and from almost every module in the car.

Now the early Mr12volt box (Black box) connected directly to the iDrive controller, where it picked up the 12volt for power and the CanBus signal wires (2, one for Can High and one for Can Low). The later boxes started using the Quadlock from the rear of the headunit. This was a large lump of wires and male and female Quadlock connectors, and in turn now creates a bit of a "squash it all in" situation (as opposed to the earlier simple 4 pin connectors plugging into the underside of the iDrive controller).
With the older 4 pin connector it was a direct Y adaptor, where it simply jumpered off the existing wires. The with new Quadlock arrangement, whereas the 12volts are still jumpered, the CanBus turns off the loom to the mmi box and the returned and goes to the Quadlock, so it's no longer a direct circuit (this also now causes the issue of not being able to connect a code reader to the headunit).
So this "may" be the issue where the Close signal is not getting through... BUT if, when it does this, you are still seeing the CIC screen, then this may suggest that the headunit is not shutting down.

Matsmith749 - I have bimmerlink and I have the car a number of years at this stage...i have checked the codes and have an error related to the LVDS but think thats from the install timeframe - Going to reset the codes and monitor.

Dave - It is the later version which is off the Quadlock. I installed the unit behind the Air Con / Heathing panel and did not expereince a lack of space at the time. you describe a very plausible answer...and definately sounds like the reason. I asssume its a case of Live with it....

Reinserting the key fob on and off shuts the screen down so not a major issue but would be good to have an answer.

That's interesting that the car isn;t reporting the screen not closing - I will do a scan on mine tonight & see exactly what the code is & post it here.

With no code, it sounds like a different issue (that looks the same)

I have the latest MMI 12volt box and it does affect the head unit. Code readers can not access it and I have LDVS errors on my code reader.

Randomly it will take a few minutes to open and rarely fails to close. However if I lock the car it then closes.

I’ve chosen to live with it

LVDS code has triggered 6 times in the last 12 months, flap mechanism fault 7 times in the same timespan.

That's with the blue version of the Mr12volt MMI - before I fitted it, I had the flap fault at about the same frequency (that's the screen staying open), but the LVDS error is new & likely related to the MMI install.

Overall no worries - it's a glitch every few months that I ignore.

Reamsey,

Now that you mention it, it is slow opening sometimes also, I was unaware that if i lock the car it will close, thats a good workaround for me....

matsmith749,

That seems like a different error - Think i will stick with what I have for now and enjoy the benefits...

Thanks
Eric
