Hi guys- can anyone advise- very very occasionally I get a kind of 'screech' on start up lasting only a second or so when I turn the key- then disappears- engins runs beautifully- quiet-no problems...
any thoughts ????
Thanks

possibly the bearings in the starter motor or maybe a slipping belt... alternator?

I would say a loose belt

Yes that sounds like the starter motor..sticky pinion gear , the starter gear is thrust into the flywheel gear(by a solenoid)to crank the engine , then when you realease the Ign. key it disengages from the flywheel gear by spring force If it's slow disengaging due to dirt/grease on the shaft the engine drives the motor causing that screech.

As above probably the starter motor

However many of us get this but it only occurs on cold days

Yes, I've also noticed that, only on cold or very humid days. i also think its a starter motor.

Yep, sounds like another problem I've had

Tried lubricating the shaft (ahem) but didn't make any difference. In the end I got the starter motor replaced with a nice Bosch one (only cost me £135 total so not too bad). No more screeching on start up :)
