I understand some scratches can be polished out of bodywork
My question is : can they be polished out of plastic bodywork trim like bumpers or only metalwork?

As long as the plastic has been sprayed and lacquered (i.e. colour matched trim) you can polish as normal. Fibreglass gelcoat its more difficult.

If you are talking about black/grey 'bare' plastic trim then there is no way to 'polish' out the scratches due to the texture. The appearance can be improved with various products or the hair dryer trick.
