I have a couple of 2 inch scratch marks one on the driver door and one on the bonnet. Getting polish in them makes it worse and when I rub my nail over them I believe they cannot be easily polished out. Don't want to spend yet more money on the car( eg chips away etc) and for 8 yes old it's pretty good. Any suggestions that might help disguise scratches or is it best just to leave well alone. Colour sterling grey.

I would rub a swirl remover polish by hand just to ''round'' the edges of the scratch, reducing visibility from reflection. You'll want to rub in opposite direction of the scratch, overlapping it by about an inch or so. Then, use something with carnauba and/or bee's wax content, as they won't leave white residue inside the scratch.

My Father-in-law had some similar marks on his (ahem) Kia Sorento... He did not want to spend a fortune.
So I used Farecla G3. There is a range of it at Halfrauds. Gently tackled each scratch and was amazed at the improvement...
I had some Zymol kicking around which I used afterwards. Overall the scratches are not so obvious and "disguised" with the polish.
The Detailers who are on this forum will no doubt have more info on suitable products and techniques.
