Scottish Highlands Road Trip

Just got back from a week long, 1600 mile trip round the Scottish Highlands. Loved every minute of it and I'll be going back ASAP. The roads are amazing, everything from long fast sweeping bends through open valleys, to tight technical mountain passes and best of all - virtually empty. :D

Day 1: Doncaster to Dumbarton

Plan was to break the journey up by stopping at Dumbarton. Ideal base to get to the Highlands as it cuts out any morning traffic you'd end up in if you'd have stopped in Glasgow.

Tried to avoid long stints of motorway driving so I went for the A168 that runs north pretty much parallel to the A1 for a few junctions. Nice and empty and a good stretch of road imo. It was then on to Ripon to join the A6108 followed by the A684, two nice roads through the Dales. From Hawes I went on to Kirkby Stephen and eventually the M6 to Gretna. By the time we'd got to Gretna, the rain was coming down heavy and I was hoping it wasn't a sign of what we'd end up all week! This continued as we drove on, following the A75 to Dumfries.

At Dumfries we turned on to the A76 following this to Thornhill where we then did the combination of the A702 and B7078. A lot of the route was based on the Highlands thread over on Pistonheads and someone recommended them as a break from the M74. Superb suggestion!

Followed the B7078 all the way to J8 of the M74 then stuck the sat-nav on for the last 30 odd miles. Glasgow was a bit manic especially considering the roads we'd just been driving on!

Final resting place for the night:

Tomorrow, Dumbarton to Fort William…

Day 2: Dumbarton to Fort William

Day 2 and I'm up, excited about the roads today had in store - mainly the A821 (Duke's Pass) the A82 to Glencoe and the "Scotsburg ring" around Loch Leven, the B863.

We rejoined the A82 out of Dumbarton and took the A811 through Balloch before heading up the A81 to the start of the Duke's Pass at Aberfoyle.

We came out of Duke's Pass on to Loch-Venachar…

After a quick break we continued on to Callander and joined the A84 to Lochearnhead. Here we took the A85 to Crianlarich and then the A82 to Glencoe.

At Glencoe we turned on to the B863, the infamous Scotsburgring. Ever since we left the motorway the previous day, I'd been amazed by the roads again and again but the B863 took it up a notch. Lots of corners but with long enough sections in between to build up speed. The weather was fairing up and the roof came down at last. Did a couple of loops of this and continued back along the A82 to Fort William.

more please, more!

Thanks for the first installment of a very scenic journey... makes me want to plan a road trip too!

Cheers

Great pics and brings back fantastic memories for me of my round Scotland road trip I'm my black roadie a few years ago

Did you manage to get up around cape wrath? And along Kyle of tongue etc - absolutely stunning part of the country with little white sand coves - and they are all empty!

Looking forest to more pics!

Looks like you had a good time even though the weather was a bit 'iffy'
We're heading up to Loch Lomond next week and will try the Dumfries/7078 diversion if the weather is amenable.
Otherwise it will be straight up the motorway with roof on!
Thanks for posting!

The Callander to Glencoe road is a peach, some really tight twisty roads and some immensely long straights where you can let her rip (less of the 2.0i jibes :poke: )

Enjoy the trip
