Scottish Highlands (again!)

I've just got back from a trip to the Highlands. This is the third one I've done in the Z and probably the best one yet. I've previously gone in May and September and although they were quiet in terms of traffic, I had the roads to myself this time! Was great to see the snow on the mountains too, the roads were clear apart from the odd patch here and there. I did ~1600 miles over 6 days. Some days it was raining pretty much constant but still managed to get the roof down wherever possible.

Hands down these are the best driving roads in the UK, so jealous of those who live up there and have these roads on their doorstep! Every time I come home I spend a bit of time on Rightmove dreaming lol.

Enjoy...

If anyone wants details of the roads / routes let me know.

Lovely pics mate. My other halfs parents live up there so I get a free holiday up there every year 8)

Hi

Lovely & Lovely .. great pictures

I really have a soft spot for a pre face lift Z4's .. even though I own a 35is drive ..

That all looks fantastic. A stark change from the convoy of 40+ cars we had on the weekend. I do fancy those open roads and cant believe there's still that much snow around.
Great pics, thanks for posting them. (Very useful to badger Spikey into arranging the Scotland Trip !) :poke:

Incredible pictures and I very nearly emailed work to tell them I wouldn't be in for a few weeks, picked up my keys and started an impromptu, 9:20pm journey north!

What was your schedule and where did you visit? One day I have to do this. Have a very good mate that lives a few miles outside Glasgow I could use as a start/finish base camp too.

Thanks all for the positive comments.

They were all quick phone snaps so unfortunately the quality isn't amazing but it gives you an idea. I am toying with the idea of getting a Go-Pro and filming the next trip though by the time you purchase all the necessary add-ons (car mount, external mic, battery eliminator etc) it's looking pretty expensive!

Beautiful pics and fantastic scenery!... is your zed on coilovers?

No coilovers mate, Eibach springs and 15mm spacers on the rear which is perfect. Used to run 20mm but after the last trip to Scotland they rubbed too much.

Do it! The first thing I did when I went back to work was to put another holiday in and book the hotels etc. Off up again in 3 weeks. :D

Glasgow would be an ideal base to start from - I normally stop at Dumbarton or Helensburgh.

Day 1: Doncaster to Dumbarton via Yorkshire Dales

Day 2: Dumbarton to Fort William via Helensburgh and Oban including a few laps round the "Lochleven Ring"

Day 3: Fort William to Ullapool via Applecross Pass

Day 4: Ullapool to Inverness via Durness

Day 5: Inverness to Dumbarton through the Cairngorms National Park

Day 6: Back home, usually in silence, wondering if I should turn around and stay in a Travelodge until the money runs out

You could extend it another day or 2 by adding in Northumberland / the Yorkshire Moors on the way back although to be honest, after the previous 5 days blitzing around Scotland these roads seem a bit lacking.

Each day works at around 200-250 miles which is an ideal balance between driving, stopping off at a couple of touristy places, a decent lunch, photo opportunities etc.

The applecross pass is amazing. I have this all on my doorstep and I am very grateful for the roads within the highlands. Some really nice photos there mate. Some places I also recognize! No surprise it rained though...but when its sunny and the roads are bone-dry... :trampoline:

Cheers buddy.

I wouldn't class the Applecross pass as a hooning road as such due to the limited visibility, but the views / experience is worth it alone. Then again it's always been around midday by the time I've got to it, I imagine it'd be a giggle in something a bit more rally-focused first thing the in the morning, or late at night when you can have a clear run at it.

Up again in 3 weeks so hopefully I'll see more of this sunshine we've been having recently! Where abouts are you based then?
