Scotland,serious question

As there are lots of Scots on the forum i thought you may be able to give me a viewpoint that i'm not getting from the news.
Here's what i know, being an ignorant middle-aged Englishman, having little understanding of the situation. There is a vote coming up as to whether Scotland leaves the UK but i may be wrong on this. It's being proposed by Mr Salmond who wants 16 and 17 year olds to be able to vote on this even though they can't vote in an election or buy a pint. What do you think his reasoning is for this?
Overall,if i've correctly grasped the basics of this, what do the Scottish forum members think of all this ?
Thanks for, hopefully, helping me to understand this.

Alex Salmond wants the 16 & 17 year olds to vote because he knows full well that the ignorant outnumber the intelligent.
Alex Salmond in my opinion will take this country to the dogs and will do it in a short amount of time, The referendum is indeed for independance from the UK and in my opinion will be the greatest error Scotland could make.
People will tell you of all the great explorers, inventors and every other great thing Scotland has done for the world, all these things whilst Scotland was / is a member of the UK. and without the rest of the UK we are quite simply f*cked.

apparently 16 + 17 yo olds are more likley to vote to leave the UK
they cant drive or drink - but they can vote.

apparently - only 30% of the above 18 yo wil vote to leave the UK so choosing as emotive a date as possible and giving everyone a chance to vote is the only way to drag it across the line

(am not scottish - and would probably rather that scotland stays part of the UK because unity is still strength - but if the overwhelming majority voted to leave... so be it )

Another question,
Who will be allowed to vote?
Alot of English born People live in Scotland, Do they get to vote.
Scottish expats elswhere in Britain or abroad????
or will it simply be anyone on the electoral roll in Scotland. if this is the case could I ask that about 2 million English Welsh and Irish move to Scotland soon and vote NO.

Just about every Scot I know (and that's quite a few) share this view too.

Nosa,is it likely that this will actually happen? Are there any benefits for Scotland?

I am with Nosa - it is a cynical move to allow the 'disaffected' youth to have an ill-informed and emotional (not experienced and knowledgeable) say in the future of a nation that is better off as part of the Union. Any political vote on the political and economic future of the country should be made by those who can legally vote. It is a vast and dangerous undermining of the process of democracy as laid down in law.

And as an exiled Scot, I want a vote :x

I personally think the vote will be a No, anyone with an ounce of intelligence knows we are better as part of the union.
We recieve more in subsidies from London and from the European union than we put into it.
Benifits Taxation going to Edinburgh instead of London and the north sea oil and gas tax also, although this will be wasted in more glorious style than a greek politician.
Trident is near the top of the list, you will have to find somewhere else to base them.
Apart from that I can't think of any others

The problem is - and england shares the same problem, is that politicians best career prospects take precedence on whats good for the country.

Scotland has undoubtably led innovation and exploration over the years, and once independant of the UK, can join the EU (???) and claim the same rights and priveledges as other small EU members.

I think decisions that impact on scotland (and lancashire for that matter) that are made in London by people that view Scotland as a holiday location or a private shoot is wrong and I'd like to see what scotland could achieve with enhanced independance - but i'm not sure that its financially in Scotland's interests to go for full independance

I am also a nowhere vote member :) Can't vote in the UK, can't vote in The Netherlands :o

Exiled means you were kicked out, You chose to move so nae vote for you :P

In rugby parlance, Scots (and Welsh and Irish) living down here are known as exiles. In any event, as I have said before, I am on a cultural mission to show the English the error of their ways whilst drinking their beer, earning their money and sh@gging their women... Though out of necessity I had to abandon that last when I found none suitable and married a Malaysian.

I agree though, the vote will be a no - if by some freak it is yes, the country of my fathers is f*cked and I will return on a fatwa to rid it of the Salmond

Ummm, how is that true ? My wife is a Malaysian citizen, has a 'green card', has paid UK taxes in the past, and has the right to vote. Is it a commonwealth thing ?

Zed Five, p*ss off :D

Bing, I can vote only in local council elections. I can not vote in nationals as I have a Dutch passport and as an EU citizen I can not have two passports anyway.

Just pay my taxes and suffer. Not sure it matters to the greatest extend who is in power anyway ...

Im sitting back in anticipation .......... :D

There isnt enough oil revenue and taxes in Scotland to pay the benefits, so its going to be interesting to see what happens....

Salmond is already talking 40 % income tax
He is also talking 300% rise in council tax ..... (promising zero if you are on benefits)
There is no talk at all about the mass unemployment in the navy yards .... (do you think they will let Salmond have control of nuclear weapons ...... I dont think so)
Theres also no talk about the free education ...... hahahaha
Theres also no talk about Scotlands contribution to bailing out the eurozone ....... he's thinking they will give the loot to him.

the 16 / 17 year olds will vote him in as supreme leader and will then take it straight up the arse .....

Hopefully sense will prevail .............

So if they go their own way, does that mean they get NO money from the UK government? They then have to fund their own services (NHS, Police, Fire etc) with no subsidies from the UK.

What are the benefits to them going on their own?

(them=Scotland)

Be interesting to see what would happen to the submarines if scotland got independence. Suppose Barrow where I'm from could have a good claim to be the new faslane as we already make them here and have all the infrastructure in terms of manufacturing/transporting the nuclear material etc.

Alex Salmond wants to air Braveheart each day in the week running up to the vote. All the 16 and 17 yr olds will be heavily influenced.

No doubt the buckfast drinking youth will line the streets with blue painted faces, wearing kilts, brandishing broken buckfast bottles and shouting "Freeeedom"...."Kill the English" as they line up to vote.

If 16 and 17 yr olds are to vote on this, they should be voting on everything. It's wrong to pick and choose your voters based on how easily influenced they are.

I was overjoyed when the SNP revealed last week that they have taken NO LEGAL ADVICE on the matter of the referendum. The entire point if their meaningless existence is Scottish independence - yet they haven't done any homework with the legal guys to find out if its legally possible.

Some would call that incompetence. I call it arrogance

*rant over* - back to happy
