I once offered a Scottish £20 in a London Hotel (City Inn Westminster IIRC) and was told that they only accepted English notes or EUROS??? :o

Unusual in a central London hotel - I'd have asked for the manager :D

But the first thing we did with my son's Christmas money from Scottish relatives was change the notes in the bank for English paper, because I can't be sure what will happen the next time somebody tells me a Scottish note is 'not legal tender' or calls it 'funny money'... :|
 
One thing you can be sure about is the Socialists will fight independence tooth and nail ,they have some 41MPs in Scotland :|

Independance not for me either. Quite happy to be a Scot and British. Don't think anyone has really thought this through fully - it would be an absolute logisistical and financial nightmare. So many things that haven't been mentioned or even thought of (yet). What about defence - would an independant scotland need to create army, navy and air force?

too many pitfalls for me. I won't be trading in my passport if it happens, i'll be emigrating :D
 
I wonder if lots of duty free shops would spring up on the border... especially if the Scott's opt out of Europe as well.

Thinking about it, would the old death penalty laws then come back into force as would no longer governed by London?

I just do not understand patriotism, england is just an area i live in, its just a location, it as its good and bad bits but so does every other place

if we could delete patriotism i think half the worlds problems would disappear, we could then delete religion and the other half of the problems would be gone, we could all live happily ever after

Do you think (and this is an honest, non-confrontational question) that may be because England has never been on the 'losing side' in any significant way ? The past is the past, but Ireland, Scotland and Wales have each had their share of barneys with the English in history, and we have ultimately ended up as part of a Union formed by England, whether by choice or otherwise. Not that that is a bad thing, as I have said, but is it a reason why patriotism is so differently understood / expressed in England ?

Sorry to take it back to rugby, but I was at Twickenham last year when Scotland defied the 40-0 drubbing expectation and got very close to winning. On the way back to the station I was one of the happiest people there - we played a blinder and did ourselves proud, despite losing. Most of the English supporters were miserable because they were 'disappointed' in their team's performance. Even though they won :?
 
As Scotland already has its own parliament, and has their own laws, what more is he actually trying to achieve?

Whether new "general" laws are dictated by England or by Europe, the end result is not much different and as far as finances are concerned, with Scotland being a recipient of the funds rather than a contributer it is only going to be worse off and how appreciative will the population be to pay 50% general tax to fund the "free" healthcare / universities etc.

I could see a lot of Scottish people move just over the border to live in England and work in Scotland to avoid the financial meltdown.
 
Bing, i often wonder if patriotism is a thing we a brought up to believe in, i really just don't get or understand it

i am probably different to most, but i would not hold up a english or british flag, i would not want to play sport and represent my country, i would do it for myself only

My take on patriotism is that a large number of people - luckily not a majority - use it as an excuse for a number of things: violence being one of them and often being associated with sport, e.g. use the previous black-tarring of ALL Engish football fans abroad following some despicable behaviour from a tiny minority who use patriotism as an excuse for a fight. That's the aspect of patriotism I wish didn't exist.

I'm a "sporty" person (but not football :D ) and hence love the patrotism aspect of it all. I was also brought up in a house beside a border-line anti-English father but I think I've come out of that OK... I've been at Scotland-England rugby matches and the banter in mixed sections is brilliant (imagine that happening at football though? Naw...). I've waved Scottish flags when I'm supporting Scotland, but I'll equally happily wave a union jack in the right environment (NOT Ibrox - one of the reasons I don't follow football is because of all that shite). I'm Scottish. I'm British.

with regards to sport i have always preffered team sports i.e. judo and boxing, not sure that it makes sense but i don't want to beat somebody cos he is french scottish german etc, i just want to win cos i am better on the day

and if i was in the olympics i would be fighting for me, not england

politicians create wars, they then use this english british terminology so we will stick up for them

What, apart from its delusional quality you mean? LMAO!!!

I think its a sad fact that most people enter politics for the wrong reasons, which is why I take no bloody notice of them whatsoever.

Until oil was discovered - and it will run out soon enough - I'm sure Scotland, like Wales, was a financial liability, so its swings and roundabouts. By all means break away, join the euro and get invaded by the Vikings again, but don't come bleating to us LOL when that happens!

And by the way, can we get over all this historical stuff please. Its 2012 in case nobody had noticed. Bannockburn, Flodden...WTF?

For a long time I thought it was a Scottish nutter with bagpipes and a walking stick - no idea why, but I just went with it. Only looked at it properly a few days ago. I like it :thumbsup:
