Scotland Drink Drive

There are electronic kits available but like you, I would like to know if the kit is 100 accurate.
When I go on the ferry to Europe the package includes free wine and beer but I restrict myself to a couple of glasses and hope I'm ok. I'm sure I am - but I would like to see it in numbers or a green light.

No good buying kit if not 100% accurate or reliable.

All the papers in Scotland are telling us not to trust the test kits

This is why I think there needs to be a government backed or approved kit for sale. I'd buy it. It would be a small cost versus a ban/conviction/nightmare....

Lobby your MSP ?
Or at least a letter to him/her - I think it's almost like saying "70mph" max and fitting a speedo that only reads up to 30mph :(

Nicely put Jasey.
Thankfully deaths and injuries caused by drunk drivers have dropped hugely over the years, but would there really be any difference if England had a 50mg limit instead of 80mg?
There needs to be a proper evaluation of this - I would put money on those with readings between 50 and 80 not being a significant factor. People who exceed limits don't just go a bit over them, they simply ignore them.
I would be amazed if more misery could not be prevented by hand-held mobiles being electronically disabled when a vehicle is in motion like TV's that can be seen from the driving seat are supposed to be.
Zero limits are also f*****g stupid - even mouthwash contains some alcohol!
Oh well, rant over! I've still got some vino in my glass. :fuelfire:

What is it with the cultural inferiority complex?

Surely it is the rest of Europe that should be coming into line with England?

Jeeze!

As a general *GUIDE* folks apply the 12 hour rule from your last drink, that's if you don't have a self tester available.

It's just a guide, & we are all different physically, but I've applied it for as many years as I care to remember.

The alcometer used by the Police is just a street screening device, nothing more, it tells the cop that you have alcohol in your system.

The Lion Inotoximeter is the machine used at the Police Station which takes two readings..the lower of which is used for prosecution purposes.

There must be home kits available that meet with an acceptable standard.
The French police require drivers to carry a Breathalyser !
A lot of people carry two because if stopped and tested on the only one in the car, you'd be then breaking the law by not having a breathalyser kit!

Keen as mustard the French cops..you need serious will power over there to watch watch what you drink when driving!

Drinking is the norm, with wine available like water :(

THEY!!!
As with a lot of things in the UK it will probably be trialed in Scotland and later rolled out to the rest of the country.
I reckon pubs will take a big hit and more will close.
Taxi drivers will probably be the big winners.
Law changed by the Scottish parliament not UK.

The same pricks that released the Lockerbie bomber because he had man flu.

You can't blame this one on the Rest of the UK (Or Westminster if you prefer)

:)
i thought the lockerbie bomber 's early release was rubber stamped because blair was suddenly best mates with gaddaffi :|

That would be the sensible thing to do. However, given the choice between lobbying my MP or being out in the car, I'll choose the latter :D (as long I've not had a drink the night before  )

He was released because the justice secretary is a Christian fool and felt sorry for him as he had months to live. Which turned out to be years. More God than Blair. Mind you Blair probably thought he was god.

I always thought it was 12 hours from your last drink plus 1 hour for each drink that you consumed for it to be out your system.
For example, 8 drinks with your last one at midnight would be 20 hours which would be 8pm the next day.

And people wonder why it's confusing. It also depends on how many units you drank, not how many drinks, if you were drinking something particularly strong it would have more units and take longer to be processed by your body. Chuck into that you need to factor in what you've eaten, how this effects the alcohol process oh and your body mass. It's a complete minefield.

I've actually heard folks saying that they need an hour to process whatever they've drank so work out they can drink 5 pints of Stella in 2 hours and 5 hours later they think they will be legally fit to drive. Idiots, not only is what they are drinking not just a unit per pint it would take longer than 5 hours to be processed.

People like that think I'm not a drink driver but they are. They think they are responsible by using some calculations that have basically been plucked out of the air.

I see no reason why the UK should have a different, higher tolerance than the rest of Europe. Unfortunately I've always found, and I'm sure this isn't just a scottish thing, that if I'm out with work and I'm not drinking I get stick for it or if someone is out and says I'm just having one as im driving there is always a few that say, oh go on another won't hurt! And people just give into the pressure. Scotland has actually had a drink drive advert aimed at this section of the population because he there are people that will go out and go well over, know it and still drive but there are also these 'law abiding citizens' as many seem to state who think that one more pint won't hurt because they feel fine. They don't know what impact that extra alcohol in their system is actually doing to their perception and reactions. They might feel fine, doesn't mean that they are.

I've been at the Sheriff court and heard people up on third and fourth offences for Drink Driving, pleading their case. They have no case! Even the fact that your car can be seized doesn't seem to bother these people.

Peer pressure when you are out is a nightmare Angie.

The problem is the Police only publicise their campaign over the festive period.

The rest of the year drink drivers will get away with it because there are no longer enough Road Traffic Officers to police it.

The serial drinkers will continue to get away with it because they are unlikely to get breathalysed unless they are involved in an accident.

Then of course there are the drinkers who honestly believe they can have a few the night before and are perfectly ok to drive the next day!

I'm getting too old to buckle to peer pressure these days. :D

I have noticed tho, that when I'm being driven home after a function and over the limit, I often think "I could still drive", rarely do I see a police car!

I feel that the law should state that if your driving the limit shouod be zero, basically not even a drop with a clear message that you drink you cant drive by law for 24 hours so that it covers all different types of people until its out of their system.

+1
Hear to many people say "I can have a few drinks and still feel ok"
:headbang:
It's not a DRUNK test or a How you feel test.
Every one has different reaction times, some good some not as good.
If you drink half a larger, these reactions almost half, but legally your still aloud to drive.

It might upset some people but lowering the limit is a great thing.

I go out drinking serve real times a week and I love going out with my mates of a weekend. But I have never felt it would in anyway be ok or acceptable to drive, if I drink I walk or get a cab! Iv always had it drummed into me that drinking and driving (even just a couple) is a seriously bad unacceptable irresponsible thing. If you knowing know your going to be having a drink why would you take the car, unless your lazy or irresponsible.

If anyone thinks this is not correct, find someone that has lost a family member to a drink (not drunk) driver and ask them.

I know in Edinburgh there are a LOT of unmarked cars in operation and I've seen and even been stopped myself by one on a dead road at 3am as they enquire why your out and this has been in the middle of October. It will be different all over the country but you may well be surprised by the amount of offices actually out there, they just don't stick out like a sore thumb.

Yes there should be more campaigns about it and it shouldnt be for one time of year. I know I've seen adverts in previous years throughout the year especially the ones about one more for the road. But summer or xmas seem to be the main targets.

I know Angie did it for a lot of years...just retired...You Scots do like a drink up there though :D

Different agendas in England...budgets being spent elsewhere, not on Roads Policing I might add.

I think resources are very stretched and there will be shed loads of just over the limit drivers out there!

I'm lucky that swmbo always drives me after a do, but I just don't see anything like a police car.
Random checks will be the way to catch em!

The new limit will certainly find its way south of Hadrians Wall - my guess is the next parliament - Alex Salmond will see to that when he's in the pay of Westminster!
