Schumacher in hospital in serious condition

Sad news, hope he pulls through OK.

I'm off to Les Arcs in 4 weeks and have been debating whether to get a helmet for this season. There are a lot of debates as to whether they help or not as it is argued that your perceptions are lessened and that many with helmets tend to ski in a more aggressive manner.

Regardless, sounds like the helmet could well have saved his life on this occasion! Think I'll get hold of one.

BBC now describing his situation as critical, really do hope he pulls through ok, he'll certainly have the best people around him.

I changed to helmet and goggles about 4 years ago from sunglasses and woolly hat.
Wouldn't ever think about going back. Head stays at a comfortable temp. You feel safe, secure "in the zone" cruising or bombing. no mess when or if you fall. No probs with frost bitten ears or too much sun on the old bonce!.
Definitely the way to go

Looks like it was more serious than they thought as according to the news he's undergone brain surgery and is in a coma :( Hopefully he will pull through and make a speedy recovery.

Yeh I understand this, my fear is that I'll have a much lower level of perception of what is happening around me, I.e. Upstream skiers bombing past me and me inadvertently straying into their line. The times I've borrowed helmets off piste, I felt very isolated, which is fine when on uncrowned powder, but a busy run....

As for the "no mess when or if you fall", I think the Schumacher situation is example enough that, it just isn't true. Helmets don't make one immortal, sadly that is the attitude some helmet clad skiers take, dangering themselves and others around them.

I think if Schumacher hadn't been wearing a helmet he'd be dead, given that he was wearing one and his injuries are so serious. Really hope he pulls through.

It's like motorcycling. You don't have to be overdoing it for someone else to mash you up.
My helmet saved my head at least getting cut open the first year I went boarding. I was stood still at the time.

It doesn't say if they deliberately put him in a coma, or if he fell into one. Let’s hope it is the former and all will be well.

I think it will have been deliberate ... Especially after surgery to aid with management. Hope he pulls through without too many life changing problems :'(

If he walked after accident, then deteriorated suddenly before requiring surgery then most likely he had an extradural haematoma. Spectrum of recovery broad... fingers crossed.

I hope he recovers without too many after-effects...

...I'd also like to think that someone who wasn't a multiple F1 Champion, multimillionaire and celebrity would have received the same level of care...
